Ruston, LA

The Frothy Monkey Coffeehouse

The Frothy Monkey, also known as "Frothy", is THE place in Ruston for writing that great novel of yours. It has the best coffee in North Louisiana, with people driving a half-hour from the cities of West Monroe and Monroe just to have their coffee. And if you've driven all that way and want to stay a while, that's okay, you can stay for two or three hours without the barista hastleing you. Also, bring your wi-fi enabled laptop, the wi-fi internet there is free, but the friendly card on the table asks you to buy a drink to keep up the wi-fi. And you'll want to buy a drink, the Frozen Caramel Mocha is delicious and is one of their most popular coffee drinks. For those of you who want to steady your nerves while writing you can get a smoothie, the Green Apple Smoothie sounds wierd, but it has an awesome taste. If your suddenly hungry, don't worry they serve breakfast and lunch; and if you're there for lunch you must get a Panini, they make them up when ever you order one, so they're nice and hot and fresh and delcious. Also, did I mention that you can sit down after you order and they will bring your coffee to you in a real glass and the food on porcelin plates with silverware and a napkin?
Forthy is also the local hangout for Louisiana Tech University students and professors so overhearing talk about Bach, DNA, and Edger Allen Poe is not uncommon and creates a perfect writing atmosphere, or distraction, depending on how you look at it.

Louisiana Tech Quad

Also check out the Quad in the heart of Louisiana Tech, its packed with students on the week-days, but on the week-ends its virtually empty. The Quad is very green with large oak trees and rows of flowers that are changed every season by the Tech grounds people. The Quad is in the middle of campus and is surrounded by four buildings: Howard Auditorm which is made of brick and was built during the Great Depression, Kenny Hall, which is also made of brick and built in a similar fashion to Howard, the University Booksotre, and Wyly Tower, which is the only skyscraper in town and is the home of Tech 40,000 book library collection. In the middle of the Quad is the Lady of the Mists Fountain which is normally on and running. Around the Lady of the Mists are four wooden benches that are very comfortable. Sitting on a bench with a gently splashing fountain, old oak trees, and a 10+ story tall library, just makes you want to write. And I should know, I have recently graduated from Louisiana Tech University.

Denham Springs, LA.

I like to go to the Starbucks on the corner of Hwy 16 and Magnolia Beach Rd. The staff there is really friendly and they have free wi-fi and comfortable furniture and plug ins. There is always a wide range of people in and out that make great starters for characters in books.

I'm with some family in New Orleans right now and I've found a wonderful little place to write. It's PJ's Coffeehouse on Maple Street in Uptown New Orleans. It has a small selection of coffee drinks, but all are very good, and there are some bottled drinks of water and juice if you're not a coffee drinker. There are also pasteries to eat, and like the rest of New Orleans's food they taste really good. The front of the store is a bit noisy with customers walking in and out and ordering drinks. But the back of the store is quite and this is where you'll find people working diligently on their laptops. And of course the biggest plus is that no one will bother you while you are working on your novel for two, three or more hours.

Prien Lake Park in Lake Charles. There is a space right by the water's edge with benches, steps, and space enough that people hold many events like weddings. Just on the other side of the Calcasieu River is the I-210 bridge liking L.C. with Sulphur. The wind is awesome, and if you get there at the right time (be it a sunrise, mid-day, or sunset) the sky and landscape is awesome! A great spot for poetry, dating, or fitness!

They have really good food, and it's never that crowded, so you can always get the good tables :) Almost all of the tables have outlets to plug in your laptop if your battery is running low. You can stay there all afternoon if you want and they don't rush you, and they actually play good music in case you forgot your headphones. As far as I'm concerned, this placce is like the writer's hidden gem in south county :)
