Almost by definition, YA novels are coming-of-age stories, where the MC learns a truth about life that other teenagers eventually learn, too. An exception - mostly found in MG stories - would be a story about a historical figure with the reading level at MG level. I remember reading "Squanto" when I was a young 'un, for example.

[quote="James A. Ritchie"… MG reading level depends on the particular age you're aiming for, both in content, and writing level. Even most adult novels are written at seventh or eighth grade reading level where writing style is concerned. Some adult fiction is written at fourth or fifth grade reading level. It's content that makes it an adult novel.[/quote]

http://www.renaissance.com/store/quiz_home.asp?c=1 for reading levels of YA, MG, chapter, and even some adult novels, many of which are written at an even lower reading level than seventh grade. Nearly all of John Grisham's novels, for example, are on the fourth- to fifth-grade level. Dan Brown? Most fifth and sixth. Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood"? 7.1. Margaret Atwood? Mostly fifth through sixth. Etc. You get the point.

You are right:

If Bella were in college, her romance with Edward would NOT have been as interesting and convincing.
