Frustrations for budding writers

Postby Nelson_Frisco » Sat May 10, 2014 12:12 am

As prospective/amateur writers, what are the pain points for getting your work published? Having to complete a full manuscript before getting your work reviewed? Hearing back from busy publishers? Knowing what style/genres are of interest to publishers? Would an online tool that allowed you to upload your first few chapters for review by readers and publishers be of interest?

Many writing forums - like this one! - have critique areas. And the chances of actually having a publisher read some random review site and liking the first couple of chapters of some random book found among how many others - when they could, instead, be reading something sent them via a reputable agent who has already determined that the book may have commercial value and be something that particular publisher is looking for... yeah.

It's really not that hard. Just tell me a story.

Thanks for your response. The point is that they wouldn't have to search and pick some random book as they would automatically be presented with the texts that are most popular with the readership. Effectively leading them towards content that is popular with the market and backing the authors that are behind it.

Well, no. They would (possibly) be directed toward books that were popular with those who happened to visit your site, which may or may not reflect what would be popular with the overall market. And that also presupposes that author's friends and relatives aren't gaming the system in some way.

I've heard of a few cases of agents finding writers on wattpad but only a few. There are lots of sites out there where you can post your first few chapters, if it worked that well we'd know about it by now. There are no shortcuts.

Posting anything, anywhere is not the smart way to get an agent. The smart way is to actually write to the agent directly. Why sit around hoping an agent finds you on some site like this when you can find her in a few minutes?
