Self Published Writers Forum

Postby wondo » Thu May 10, 2012 1:40 pm

I was wondering if there was enough interest in this forum for a new topic thread for self published authors. Since I have chosen that route much of the information, though excellent for writer going the traditional route, is not relevant to me or to others considering taking that route. It would be a great place to exchange ideas and for input for other, traditional writers to offer their thoughts on the topic.
Just wondering.

It's not a bad idea, but successful self-published writers need much, much more information about how publishing works, not less. A self-published writer IS a publisher, and needs to know every tool and every trick a publishers uses, why they buy this and reject that, and certainly all about the business side of writing and publishing.

I need to know how to convince teenagers to download all my novels and read them. I need an insight into what the next big trend in YA lit will be, now that sparkly vampires have jumped the shark, J. K. Rowling has turned to trying to be a successful writer for adult readers, and stories where teenagers are forced to kill each other in battle are becoming passé.

I'm sure I can ride the trend and produce salable stories; I just need to know what the subjects will be, lol.

James, I understand what you say about self published writers being publishers as well as writers and it is to address this that I propose the thread. I started self publishing about a year ago and formed a publishing company about four or five months ago when I saw that that is what I needed to do.
The question is though, what do I know about the publishing business?
The answer is almost nothing. But some of the things you mention, like what publishers buy, etc. does not pertain to me, as I purchase nothing. I write everything myself, so there is no publisher to satisfy. Granted, I have to satisfy readers and I understand this. This whole thing is an experiment to me and I learn not just one thing every day but several. Learning about this is exciting and I have the opportunity to sell my ebooks as I go, so there is not expense except for the time invested.
I also note that my question has probably been answered. I posed this question about a week ago and there are only two people interested. Not exactly overwhelming interest in it, I guess.
I guess I knew nothing about plumbing and wiring when we bought a house which needed remodeling. I learned enough to build a house several years later. I guess I can learn this business too.

A marketing thread for self-published authors? I think that would be helpful, but would WD approve?
Read samples of my Martian series (by Dorothy Piper) and two romances (by Joni Havel) on Smashwords.
Hard copies of all are on Amazon.

I think a new board for our Self-published members is a good idea. They could share ideas and experiences and encourage one another. it may also be helpful for folks thinking of going that route. So many today, many more than in the past, are self-publishing. Yep, I think it's a good idea. Hope the WD Admin agrees.

This admin went the self-published e-book a year-and-a-half ago and isn't switching. I can't think why WD wouldn't approve, inasmuch as self-publishing is not in any way in contest with what WD is doing: promoting good writing and offering various aids to help us do so. (Besides, I don't think anyone from higher above ventures into the forums very often unless they receive complaints from users.)

In response to a couple of others, all facets from publishing to writing to promotion would be covered in the thread. At least that would be my thought.
A thread dealing with this would be helpful because once you drink the Kool-Aide like I have there is no going back.
At least I don't think there is.
