My mistake. I didn't read the word-count closely enough. I saw 500+ pages and said "Whoa." I'd expect about 80,000 words for a first novel (or 320 pages). But as has been stated, this varies from one publisher to the next. I've read some great novels that were less than 60,000 words. Longer works are more difficult to sell, especially for first-time authors. That doesn't mean it can't be done, though. Like I said, if you feel strongly enough about the story length then I'd submit the manuscript.
