Literary Journals: very gritty/heavy topic

Postby david@wcom.com.au » Thu Feb 02, 2012 12:10 am

Hello,

I am looking for literary journals to submit a memoir of about 5000 words to. I am having trouble placing it however. Any advice is much appreciated.

The theme of the memoir is child abuse and an adult confrontation with parents about this abuse. The writing I fear is too heavy for most journals - I personally haven't seen writing that goes into the depths of this kind of trauma and dysfunction in a literary journal before. So I need a journal with stomach/guts/heart. I'd like to think that the writing is also well and truly literary - and has a theoretical edge also.

Where might this piece fit?

PS. I am looking for a journal that is credible/has some status. It's a very personal memoir but it's also a career thing...:)

Wow The Survivor Chronicles looks spot on!

Any idea where I can pick up a hard copy?

Do you know how well the journal is regarded?

unfortunately i have no idea. but good luck! check the info supplied by duotrope, it might tell you some things. or google it.

it does look like they prefer things only up to 1500 words, unfortunately.

there are probably more of them out there. these sites i listed might have more resources for other places where you can submit your piece.

Are there any other forums or websites that I should check?

the forum at the site i listed above has a 'writing section' - you might ask there, undoubtedly there are others who have written about their personal experiences and shared them, and they would know where to send your piece.

if i google the 'wounded hands network' comes up again and again. but i'm not looking that hard! try going past page one of Google's list.... you might find something.

Thank you.

My problem with that site is that it is focused on abuse etc rather than literary. I'm looking for something that is literary first - and interested in abuse and trauma second...

Let me put it this way - can someone please recommend a literary journal that is often open to publishing memoir about heavy and difficult topics?

you may have to just go to each one listed on duotrope and/or google 'literary journals' and check them all out for yourself...
