LMGilbert: You do have an excellent point there. I have no opinion or answer to give to that.

I will say that this topic has been annoying to read but that's my fault because I read it, right?

Man, I am digging into very old topics, but dude...
First thing I want to say: WHY everything modern/new is to be considered as trash or unworthy? (I do agree that there always are going to be Brilliant ones and Trash ones), but this one is general question.

Like, why, if I read Harry Potter and love it, does that make me a low minded person or egoist? I'm pretty sure if some 'modern' books were written centuries ago, they wouldn't have been 'considered' as trash by you (sarrot).
And as many people say, it's a matter of taste and maybe a point of view we all have.

I find it frustrating that people are being dictated as who to make a 'genius'. Like, let's be honest, how many real 'sick minded' people had been branded as geniuses, and it still comes down this way? They teach us that they are great just because they are, period. I don't argue that many, many classic writers (and not only writers) are not to be compared at for the greatness, but there are the other half of 'classic' people I find it disturbing to call them geniuses or great ones.

There are both kinds of trash, as classic, as modern. Though, ironic part is - some classic trashes had been branded as 'great', 'philosophical' things, while some modern, and really good ones had been branded as trash by some people and vice versa.

Also this is my opinion - I find most classic writers 'too descriptive' and 'slow', and the way they use languages are 'hard' to catch on - many modern writers had been criticized for being the SAME - yet those classic writers are being called geniuses. Why?

And one more thing, why nobody mentions that most (if not all) so called geniuses were - well fed, wealthy, aristocratic people? What I mean is - OF COURSE they were geniuses for all the educations they have had compared to poor people having hard times to get a single coin in home to feed their families. OF COURSE they were brilliants among thousands of stones - and today they are branded as geniuses. If in those old times were as much equality into education, I'm sure some of these guys wouldn't have been as geniuses as they are seen today. (and again, I'm not talking about ALL the classic writers, I do respect many of them and love their stories too.)

I suspect the original poster way back then was just trolling. Or if he wasn't, he was quite possibly delusional.

At any rate, the classics have their place and their fans. Some have aged well and some haven't, and that's not a reflection on their quality or the impact they had in their day; it's just the way society and reading tastes have moved on. Jane Austen novels still read beautifully and accessibly, whereas plodding through a Henry James these days is like wading through molasses.

Nietzschean philosophy was revolutionary when it came out (back in the days when religion had more of a stranglehold on defining what is ethical and what isn't - Nietzsche basically exploded all of that dogma with his insights), and while it still does have a lot of historical context to offer a philosophy student (along with Kant), most of it has long since been absorbed into society already and then further superseded by more modern social movements. (The fact that the Nazis adopted his work as one of their official doctrines also hasn't helped Nietzsche's reputation over the years.)
