It's not wrong to dream about being a famous writer, doctor, lawyer or Indian chief
while becoming one is another story. Hmm, I'm curious as you've never even read a
book from start to finish. Have you started and completed writing anything? If so,
please post some of one.
As others have suggested, I think you're here playing games. George

Srebak wrote:Is it wrong for me to try to be an author if i've never read a full chapter book? Thanks to the internet and occassionally TV and Movies, i've managed to get a certain amount of information about certain books and the authors that wrote them. I know about the books written by R.L. Stine and J.R.R. Tolkien but i've never actually read them. I have read parts of the Redwall books but i got most of my information about them from either looking online or watching the TV adaptation. Is it wrong to try and be a writer myself?

In my opinion it is not wrong of you at all. All this means is that you have a fresh look on things and will just need to take a few courses and read a little. Not everyone has to read a bunch of books in order to be an author.

Best of luck to you!

maybe not, but it would be pretty hard, if not impossible, to be a good author of books, if you didn't read 'a bunch' of 'em!

Name one writer anyone has heard of who hasn't read a library full of books.

If you want to self-publish horrible writing that no one will want to read, then, yes, you can get away with not reading books. Otherwise, no, ain't gonna happen.

The last thing on earth not reading gives you is a fresh look at things. It does just the opposite. You'll spend all your time reinventing the wheel, doing what a thousand writers before you have already done, and you'll be doing it worse.

Here's a novel thought: go ahead and write. Write the way you think it should be done. Is somebody going to buy it? Maybe. Maybe not. But you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it.

Write some stuff, throw it in the closet, go on a vacation for ten days. When you return take a nice hot shower, some heavy dinner and try reading your stuff. You'll figure it out.
While its important to read, you need to pick that ink pen and start writing. It may not get published but you'll know where you're wrong.

I respectly disagree with the last sentence. If you've never read a novel cover to cover, then there is no way you'll know where you're wrong. The reason? Because you don't know what is right since you've never read a novel. Millions of novels are written each year by people that think they've done it right and I would expect most read a ton of novels. If they are not getting it right, then someone who has never read a novel will NOT get it right.
