religion -- enter at your own risk

Postby Brian » Mon Mar 02, 2009 2:18 am

I've decided to create this thread for religious talk so people have a thread they can always turn to. Note: You can also post religious talk threads in the TAKE IT OUTSIDE forum, but nowhere else. Any religious posts in any other part of the forum will be deleted without explanation (except for spiritual/religious stories meant for critique in the Spiritual Critique forum). I'm not checking the TAKE IT OUTSIDE forum nor will the other moderators, so everyone is on their own here. Please be respectful and, if you don't like something, then avoid these types of threads.

Thanks so much for putting this up for us Brian! I only have a minute this morning, but I hope to be posting here later today.

Amanda, Johnny, maybe you should post your replies, (or a version of them), to Jai's original thread here to get us started.

I think this is a bad idea because religion is a lot more sensitive a topic than politics due to religion's extremely personal nature. People are only going to fight, hurt feelings, and leave others with nasty tastes in their mouth more so than in the political thread. This is so pointless because we're not here to spread our faiths in this thread but rather to tear each other's faiths down along with a good amount of belittling. What's so conducive about that? I'm all for intellectual discussions, but I don't think that this thread will allow anyone to change or add anything new to a person's already held fast beliefs. Okay, that's my two cents. Have fun tearing each other apart. :)

Sammy,

I understand where you are coming from. It is a highly personal part of each person. The thing is, if some want to discuss religion they now have a place to do so. Anyone trying to change a person's beliefs by using an internet chat board is quite frankly short-sighted. Meanness will have the opportunity to rear its ugly head, but then so wiil the insight into the person displaying it. Maybe, this being a relativly respectful family of members, manners will prevail. But when it comes right down to it Brian has stated very clearly, if you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen. You probably won't see me here much at all:)

I see no need to worry about that. As you said, religion is personal, but adults must remember that their views are their alone, not of the entire human race. I'm positive we can have a coherent discussion about it without ripping each other to pieces. I, personally, do not believe in organized religion at all. Faith is something that you alone can either have or not. No building full of people can give you faith. It is my belief that I am just a person, incapable of understanding things of such nature. If I were meant to understand, I would. I don't. Were we evolved from amoeba to monkey to human, or created from dust? Heck, I don't know. I was born in 1982... so I was made like the rest of you were. Fertilization of an egg. What happened before that... I wasn't there, so I don't know.

I usually don't end up in arguements over religion. It's a bit odd really, considering that I am Pagan. I find I get more questions about it than anything else. I've never understood why so many people fight about this subject.

Oh I can't wait for the new documentary on Discover...or was it History International?...anyway, the documentary about the books not chosen to be in the cannon of the Bible. It looks fascinating...but then that kind of thing fascinates me.

I have a certain set of beliefs, but as I've gotten older I've started questioning the things I was taught. Not the foundational things (Father, Son, Holy Ghost), but the topics that seems to me to be mostly "regional" issues rather than what is found in the Bible. I think so many parts of the Bible can be taken in any direction a mind is willing to take it...even if it might not be biblically sound. Just something some old white dude decided was gospel and started teaching it. At this point in my life I'm trying to weed through those kinds of things and put them out of my life.

She is a Pagan... Pagan and Wicca are not the same thing, though many assume they are. The Pagan religion is much older... with ties to Druidry, if I'm not mistaken. It's been a long time since I've read up on it though.
