I like 'The Highwayman' very much although I cannot remember the author. My fav. is an obscure ballad that I haven't seen in years called, 'The Ballad of Hell". I cant remember the author of that one either. I've preformed both of them at high school speech tournaments. If anyone knows these authors, let me know.

Ballad of Hell was written by John Davidson, 1895 I forget that you can Google almost anything these days. Duh.
Alfred Noyes wrote The Highwayman".

I'm a little late to this discussion, but thought I'd chime in anyway. One of my absolute favorites is "Late Fragment" by Raymond Carver....a piece he wrote not long before he died. It's in the collection, "To The Waterfall" (I think that's the title, it's not right in front of me...).

Jim Moore has some wonderful stuff in his collection, "Lightning at Dinner." Worth a read.
