Depends on the level....

**if it is a conference for advanced writers, the facilitators should be knowledgeable in the subject and provide examples, and give real-world experience tips

**if it is a conference for novice or new-to-the-field writers, the facilitators need to be receptive to any question and have suggestions for improvement. The conference should have a "basic skills" workshop

**if it is an all around conference, I imagine it like the Antiques Roadshow....a little bit for everyone....one-on-one meetings, workshops, a meet-the-author type deal

I would expect to be hiding in a corner somewhere hoping to go unnoticed.

Sorry, but this question seemed so forlorn with only one respondent--albeit a sensible one. ;)

I'm in the midst of sending queries to agencies, and from what I've read on Writer's Market and on the agents' web sites it seems that conferences are where writers crash out of the slush pile, over the transom and onto the desk of someone who'll give their work a proper once over.
I'm still procrastinating the May Book Expo. The idea of making a pitch does put a solitary writer on a stage that may be an alien adventure beyond the nature of a writer, BUT the temptation to be able to write "Requested Material" on the front of an envelope sounds pretty good.
Do they serve drinks? Might help.

I expect many publishers and even more aspiring writers following them around trying to see if their manuscripts will get published. I'm guessing there might be some people giving lectures on...stuff--for lack of better word. Maybe even some famous authors there talking about how they published their books. I've never been to a conference or convention or anything like that before, so I've kind of ran out of ideas.
