How to promote your book

I read online writing a book is the easy part, and marketing is the hard part. I also heard I should start marketing myself 6 months before I have the book published. I finished my book, and its almost finished being edited. Now I am wondering how to promote my book. I have a blog and website, which I post weekly, which I don't get much views. I use social networking sites like Bloggers, Facebook, LinkedIn,StumbleUpon, Twitter, and Pinterest. Is there anything that is affective that helps promote the person, and people know about the book. I find its time consuming going through all these social networks. It is also confusing how to go about getting my name out there, and marketing. Does anyone have advise what best worked for them or to get people to notice the person's book. Any advise would be appreciated.

My advice (note the correct spelling) is to write another book.

I find that less is more when it comes to marketing. When I see spammy posts on Facebook, et al, about a book, I immediately cross that book off my list of potential purchases, especially if the book is a one-shot deal. I see that you're doing a lot of marketing, and you're right - marketing is hard work. Why not use some of that time and effort in creating your next book instead?

Write and publish another book. And another. And another. Keep writing and don't lose focus that you are a writer. Self publishing is a long term project. IMO trying to promote your book will sap time from your writing time. You have to get a lot of material up there to get noticed. The more books, short stories that you have up will increase your chances of coming up on searches and it helps if multiple books are visible on those searches.
My opinion, anyway. I don't mess around promoting, just keep writing. It is starting to pay off. When your books do start selling, readers will find a lot of books you have written and may buy more. I have read that readers are more likely to buy a book from a writer that has several books as opposed to one that has just one.

Apparently Paul was writing his post at the exact same time I was as we said essentially the same thing. Sorry, Paul for repeating what you said.

Thank you for replying to my post. I am actually working on another book. From all the information I found online, I felt really confused. Many people indicated that writing is the easy part, but promoting is the hard part. I even try to join forums to interact with people, so people would get to know me first before I start promoting a book. It's a little hard because it is time consuming. I always hear people are more likely to buy a book of an author they heard of (the more books out there the better). I completely agree, as well as not to be too spammy. What suggestions do you have for a writer who is planning my first book? How will people buy my book if this is the first one will be published?

Well I am published through a small press, which does some limited marketing, but I"m also encouraged to do my own marketing. I have had 2 books published and both have been reviewed in a Chicago weekly newspaper which has also previously published some op-ed pieces I wrote. I was hoping the reviews would help get word out, and so far I only have a small amount of other reviews online.

I have participated in quite a few giveaways, both email and paperback, and have had a couple awesome people from WD whose blogs actually have readership host some giveaways. (There is one going on right now!) I'm also on many social networking sites, but I'm best at Facebook and have the most followers on Twitter.

This week, in a new experiment, I will be putting out an ad in that newspaper for my newest book. They asked for a link with purchase info to use in their weekly email promotion, so I sent the link that displays all my works through that publisher (2 novels, 2 short stories, and 1 free flash fiction.) Hopefully this will help!

I also found out that my books are listed on the web site in a bookstore in Chicago, and I hadn't known that before!
