Marketing After you Self-Publish

When you self-publish, you have to market your book on your own. How do you get started on this? How do you get people to read/review your book, and what avenues of publicity are available (and affordable) to the unknown author?

thanks,

M.

I'm looking forward to seeing answers to your question, too. :)

But remember: less is best when it comes to marketing … which will come as a shock to the incessant promoters on Facebook.

And as our own R. Weinstein says:

I am following Dean Wesley Smith's advice. The best marketing is to write your next book. The more you have published, the easier it is to find your stuff. And if you have several shorts, novels published when someone finds your work and likes it there is a lot to choose from. I have seen research that suggests people will buy faster from an author that has several works available than from someone that has just one. So after you have written, revised, edited, proofread, formatted and uploaded, sit down and write the next one.

Very good points Paul and Wondo. One of my thoughts toward resisting diving into self-publishing is lack of material. Paul, you have six novels in your series now? That's a great amount to work with. Even with traditional publishing, it's very rare to have a slam dunk bestseller with the first novel. To go on Amazon or B&N and see Paul's name associated with multiple novels entices me to check him out. My thoughts as I work on my third are after I have three polished novels and working on the forth, I may think long and hard about releasing them on my own. Not that this is my recommendation, but I think three is a great number to start with if going the self-pub route. Just my opinion of course. Not only is it better than one, the amount I have learned over the course of writing them is night and day. If I had self-pubbed the first novel when I originally thought it was ready, I would have had a few dozen sales from friends and family, got discouraged, and stopped writing. By holding out, I've learned a lot of things that I did wrong and put that toward my second. I learned even more and am putting that toward my third. I will then go back and edit/re-write the first two.

I have a big learning curve, especially with covers. I recently redesigned the covers for one of my pen names and I think it is much improved. I made them all from the same template to try to establish a "brand". They may still lack professionalism, but they are at least consistent and look much better than the old ones. I am still learning. that is the thing, I think, is not to be afraid to try something and see how it works. If it doesn't, try something else. My next project is to try to improve the blurbs.

Forgot to add that I also have sales in Germany and Spain, this month, and previously I had sales in the U. K., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia and another from Spain. I'm an international worst-selling author!
