I just discovered a free and simple trick to help PROMOTE YOUR BOOKS if you self-publish like I do. The graphic designer that I used to format my latest book (a self-publishing guide) in print and eBook did a great job, so I offered to provide a testimonial. The graphic designer happily accepted my quote and published it on their website's testimonial page along with the cover of my book and a link to its Amazon page. This testimonial page even showed up on Google within a day or so when I did a general search for my book. If you hire a graphic designer, book cover designer, editor, illustrator, etc. for your book, you may consider giving those folks testimonials b/c it might result in free publicity for your book (something all authors need). I hope this tip helps some folks here.

Free yes, easy too, but is it cost/time effective?
How many people go to those web sites and will actually read it. And how many of them will want to buy your book?

Not all advertising/marketing is geared toward direct sales. Grocery stores have a sale on toilet paper - not because they want to sell TP but because it's a low-cost product for them, everyone needs it, and a sale gets people into the store where they buy other things. And your example of coke is another good example of "indirect marketing" - I don't know how many times I've seen ads on TV for things that, at that particular time, I have no interest in - but later on, I do and who do I think of? Those ads.

If a promo is free, the very first book sold because of it is pure profit from a promo cost POV.

And if I might add, something I've seen very few people mention when discussing SP is to audit some basic marketing courses. Because yes, too many folks think advertising and marketing are the same thing (they're not) and too many people think that if it doesn't lead directly to a sale, it's money out the window (it's not). They will advertise their book - but not promote their website (which is where all their books should at least be listed). Or they'll use their blog for nothing but advertising their book - how many people will follow that?

Marketing is an extremely important part of any business - and self-publishing IS a business. One needs to do their homework.
