Writing software?

If you've come across a great book, Web site, organization, etc., that you find particularly useful for writers, share it here.

I wonder if this is a good place to post this first question of mine - the thread title seems right!

Anyway, I'm looking for an app that I can run on a recent iPhone which should be able to:

- Simply import/export plain text documents which could be 20 or even 30 pages long (individual chapters or maybe parts of a book)

- Encrypt and decrypt these documents on said recent iPhone using secure technology

- Allow editing of these documents on the recent iPhone

- Ideally has an in-document search function.

Encryption is an important one for me as if ever the iPhone were to be lost I wouldn't be comfortable with others seeing an unfinished tome.

I'm not bothered about rich text and so on - for me the unadorned words speak for themselves.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me here.

Hi:

I suck as a typist. I mistype nearly every word.

I'm looking for a word processing program that is a good fit for my atrocious typing.

A normal word processor is good, as far as it goes: it underlines my mistyped words. Trouble is, since I mistype almost every word, I have to MANUALLY fix almost all the words from a menu of suggested changes, or type in the changes myself. Time consuming!

What I want is a word processor that AUTOMATICALLY drops in a suggested change, and underlines where it did so.

Of course, the computer will often guess wrong. However, when it guesses right, I won't have to manually instruct the computer to make the change. Major time saver!

I am not talking about an auto-complete feature. I am talking about what could be called an "auto replace" or “suggested replacement” feature.

Has anyone seen this feature? I want it!

TY in advance :)

(I'd also like to see a way to quickly toggle back and forth from original typing to suggested corrections.)

James

Thanks, James R. -- you're right, slowing down the typing would help. One downside of typing more slowly is that I lose a lot of ideas that way.

I definitely want to check in to programming auto-corrections to common typos, as you suggested.

One thing I have been having very good results with is dictating into the Android voice recognition feature on my smartphone The flow of ideas is not impeded, and the writing has far less need for correction. The downside is that in some social situations it is not graceful to dictate out loud, so I have to write manually.

Thanks again for your feedback, James :)

MS Word. But nothing beats writing on a paper or a notebook.

Google Docs. Though I'm thinking about trying out bibisco for organizing chapters and scenes.

i find that most software that is supposed to do it all with some special swiss army tool kit only slows things down
you spend too much time futzing with the program than you do really writing

my 50 years of experience says that
ms word (now) and a big table with a pile of 3x5 cards
makes me the most productive

that said
i do use final draft to format a script

and i might use specialised batch software for specific needs
like formatting for kindle or making pdfs for publishing via POD

but for actually getting the real writing done by using msword to enter text
and 3x5 cards plus a table to organise what i am writing first
is what works best for me
