What not to put in a cover letter

Postby calli » Mon Jan 15, 2007 6:11 pm

This website covers what not to put in a cover letter. The author states these tips pertain to short story submission to SF magazines, but I think these guidelines are helpful for short story submissions of any genre. Hope you all find them useful.

Don't take this the wrong way, but didn't a lot of that stuff seem like common sense?  I mean I admit I didn't realize how crucial it was that a cover letter be sent ( I guess I'm one of those wannabe  writers), but some of that stuff seems a little silly.  For instance, some of it I didn't know (don't spend much time on plot, whereas a novel query requires it), but do people really send in cover letters that they haven't proofed?  I mean jeez, they remind you to spell your name correctly.  If I can't get published over someone who can't spell their own name right in a cover letter, my writing must be absolutely without any redeeming value at all.  I may go play in traffic now... :(

Thanks for the link, though spelling and grammar related stuff is common sense the site is still pretty useful as a resource and reminder :)
