If you are a nonfiction author, you will want an index. Some authors will create their own index but using a professional indexer can really make a difference. If you are looking for a good indexer, the American Society for Indexing has a listing of indexers.

a good indexer that knows your subject matter can make a difference.
a generic indexer using software to help create it may not do such a good job.
and they cant index what is not in the book.
i find too many NF books omit telling about something before they use it.
its obvious to the author what some icon looks like and where it is but they dont tell the new learner just confuse them by saying click on icon << X >> leaving the reader with a wtf moment.
