Hopefully I'm misreading your post, TwoStep, but it sounds like "people aren't reading what I like to write so they're stupid" - and that can be very dangerous territory to step into. Perhaps doing a bit of reading into how "great" authors of the past were viewed by their contemporaries would change your perspective - a great many of them were considered "hacks" and "opportunists" in their day.

Authors become popular and/or best-sellers for many reasons - a stupid audience isn't one of them. Do yourself a favor - respect readers. It will show through in your writing.

(In the interest of honesty, I have read a lot of the authors and types of authors you disparaged. I have also read Twain, Tolstoy, Steinbeck, Dickens, yada yada yada. So I guess, depending on your tastes, I'm either dumb or brilliant. :? )

It's really not that hard. Just tell me a story.

Of course, this is not to say that every failed writer was an unfairly neglected talent. Plenty of bad authors never made it, and very deservedly so.

But whether an unknown author was either bad or good, the common public was always the least likely to determine that, one way or the other. Mainstream audiences are like hounds: they have to be led to a scent. Also: a dog will enjoy a chunk of steak, but he'll also eat feces. No discrimination whatsoever. The mass of everyday people are almost like horses with blinders on. The least effective judges of anything, ever.

Some yrs ago, when 'Angels in America' came out, wasn' t there some survey that showed as many as 65% of all Americans actually still believe in 'angels'?

Be proud of your mistakes when they form from blinding passion. But now edit them.
