"It seems rather like wanting to be ... a writer, rather than wanting to write. It should be a by-product, not a thing in itself. Otherwise, it's just an ego trip." - Roger Zelazny

It's really not that hard. Just tell me a story.

Social Media management is a small part of my day job as a PR specialist. If you want to start a social media presence before you publish or after, you have to understand a few things about online campaigning, reputation management and analytics. First, analyze the current social media apps that exist and focus on the ones relevant to you. Plan and create content well ahead of your publication date. Take Twitter, for example. We will have an excel sheet with tweets due for publication as far as 2 months ahead. We respond to @mentions using a constantly updated FAQ manual as a guide. We set a target for the maximum time we allow before responding. We evaluate our tweet schedule for the coming week each week by looking at previous communication between us and our followers to determine if the information we planned for is still timely and relevant or if we need to make alterations. We document a crisis manual by predicting ways things can go wrong, the kinds of problems or issues our followers will face and how we mitigate these issues online and off. This document gets updated too. We use analytics to determine when the peak times are for tweets, why did 300 people follow us on a specific date and why none followed us on another. What kind of content gets mentions and what doesn't? then using that interpreted data, say every 6 months, you readjust your overall strategy.

First, please recommend the agents that do not expect a novelist to have a platform! (Just joking...I'll find them.) Truth is, it seems they all really want you to be established. The more you do for them, the better. They want you to come wrapped up all nice like a Christmas gift- the perfect package. Second, thanks for the tips on security. It's good to start thinking about all that now - up front.

It seems the spirit of the thread drifted, however. Maybe there is no real answer to the original post.
