Publishing within an existing theme

Postby dtfrancis15 » Wed Feb 15, 2006 5:42 am

I have noticed how many Star Trek and Star Wars spin off books there have been over the years, to name just a few shows and films with them.

How do you get something within such an area published? I know that you have to be invited to write for some of these, for example Star Wars, but for a TV show for example, who do you need to approach? or would a publisher do this if they liked your story?

Any tips on how to do this?

Many thanks

I have completed a 71,000 word 'fan fiction' and it is now being checked, edited and proof-read. Just need to know wether to go through the publisher route as normal or if you have to seek permission from the copyright holder before you seek publishing.

Does that make sense?

You won't be able to publish a piece using characters created by someone else unless you get explicit permission from that person/organization/etc. I would suggest looking on the Web site for the series (or whatever) to see if they welcome submissions or stories created using their characters. Be forewarned, though; many of these organizations do not appreciate "fan fiction" because it is, after all, copyright infringement since it was written without their permission.

I don't think the original poster is asking about fanfiction.  The Star Trek/Star Wars type of subsequent productions are licensed franchises.  I'd begin with the publisher for books and the producers for films to find the franchise holders.

I have certainly written to the studio concerned as the first step. From the UK it will take several days for the letter to get there, then I guess it could be weeks or months before a reply (if at all) turns up.

This isn't fanfiction. Fanfiction is nearly always illegale, and you can get in major, an dhugely expensive, trouble for trying to get it published.

Writing spinoff material for TV shows or movies is something you will almost certainly have to be invited to do by whoever holds the copyright and the trademarks to the material.

I certainly agree that they need to control what goes on in these stories - imagine how many different lines there could have been in the Star Wars or Star Trek universes - but for a cancelled show or an old show/film, surely those copyright holders might be a bit more flexible?

So sites like fanfiction.net are far from legal then? and you can be sued if you do post on there?
