Gave 3 Speeches at a Large College Teacher Convention

Postby mikeyboy_esq » Mon Mar 05, 2018 1:02 pm

Last weekend, I attended a large college teacher convention and gave 3 speeches based on my 2 nonfiction books. This was a huge step for me as I wasn't sure I'd have the guts to give presentations in front of my peers from all over the state (and possibly making a fool of myself!). Anyway, I'm happy to report that all 3 speeches went smoothly, and I had a good time giving them. I didn't want to mention my books too much during my presentations as these are my peers. I did give away some free books at each speech. Luckily, some folks in the audience of my 2nd and 3rd presentations asked about my books and I ended up selling almost 20 books. That was a nice surprise, and I'm very grateful to have sold this many. I'm undecided if I'll do this convention again next year or not... depends on whether they do it out of town or not (this 3-day trip cost me about $700 and my book sales were less than $200, so not sure it makes economic sense to continue doing this event). In any case, it looks good on my (author) resume, and I'm very grateful for the exposure that me and my books received from this event.

I'm curious to hear if other folks on this forum have had luck selling enuf books at out of town speeches to justify the cost?

Congratulations!

I haven't done anything like that, but I have heard from many sources that sales aren't the only "payback" - the exposure definitely has value down the road.

But again - congrats on how well you're doing.

That's a good point. And thank you for the kind words!

I just spoke to someone who works for this college teacher conference and I found out they are coming to my town next year. So I'm hoping I'll be invited to speak again next year b/c I can avoid the hotel cost (which was the biggest expense of this trip). Still unsure if I'll be willing to spend big $$$ to attend the conference when it goes out of town. Maybe sales will pick up next year and make the cost less of an issue. We'll see.
