Okay, so, since it says bragging is encouraged...

I DID IT! I finished my first novel!
Actually, I did it in August, but there was no one to brag to so I'll just do it here. It took me a year and a half! 620 pages and 220k words!

And the sequel is 89k words and 266 pages long since I finished in August and I'm bragging because I actually need to brag! Hurrah!

Well, Starchaser, I really don't want to give away the plot because it isn't copyrighted yet. I'm looking for literary agents and all that first. But, if you can, think of it as Christopher Paolini meets Brandon Mull.

congratulations!!! (and technically your work is copyrighted as soon as you write it, but it's normal to want to keep your work to yourself, too!)

What do you mean? How can I prove it's mine if someone takes it away and publishes it (yes, that's my biggest fear) ? I know of the Poor Man's copyright, but I want a good one that will actually be enacted as if it was already on the shelves.

If you have your saved work, witnesses such as family and friends who have read it, earlier drafts, etc., these are all things that could be used to prove it if such a problem did arise. Yeah it would be a pain, though. But I don't think this would be a big problem unless someone posted their whole entire book somewhere. It wouldn't be a good idea to post your whole book anywhere, but if you just talk about it here, or post a scene or two, that's not going to be a major problem. We are a small community of people here, many of whom are already published in one way or another, so while your fears might be very natural you can learn that this is a safe place. You don't have to post anything if you don't want to, and you're not required! But I've gotten a lot of help here, posted some of my own work for critique over the past 3-4 years, and now my first book is published through a small press with another one on the way. And no one here stole it, too.

I don't have trouble posting small scenes or asking for help from my friends, but I don't want to give away the plot either. I hope you can understand; it's a huge book that I've spent 1 1/5 years on. The sequel is about halfway through as well. It's 220k words and the sequel is about 90k words.

But I'm sure once I'm comfortable, I'll be posting scenes and humorous parts soon enough!
