If you have your saved work, witnesses such as family and friends who have read it, earlier drafts, etc., these are all things that could be used to prove it if such a problem did arise. Yeah it would be a pain, though. But I don't think this would be a big problem unless someone posted their whole entire book somewhere. It wouldn't be a good idea to post your whole book anywhere, but if you just talk about it here, or post a scene or two, that's not going to be a major problem. We are a small community of people here, many of whom are already published in one way or another, so while your fears might be very natural you can learn that this is a safe place. You don't have to post anything if you don't want to, and you're not required! But I've gotten a lot of help here, posted some of my own work for critique over the past 3-4 years, and now my first book is published through a small press with another one on the way. And no one here stole it, too.
