I believe a holiday honoring the self-adhesive stamp is in order. When I think of the potential havoc that terrorists could've inflicted on all those who utilized worldwide postal services (and those who are dedicated stamp collectors) for paper-exchange style communications by simply contaminating the water-activated postage stamp glue with, like, whatever... anthrax or something, I fall to my knees and offer thanks for the far-seeing inventor(s) of the self-adhesive postal stamp. While initial claims that the self-adhesive stamp first issued by Tonga and Sierra Leone were attempts to avoid stamp-clumping in the more humid tropical zones during the 60's (smack in the middle of the cold war), I'm sure that files that no longer exist would note the reduction of anthrax cases in those areas. In 1974, the US had seen enough Tongan trials so that they bought into the self-adhesive technology in a big way. At first, stamp collectors were critical - something about the stamps yellowing - but over time they also rejoiced in that particular highway to freedom's groin was now closed to terrorism. Perhaps a contest to name this particular holiday could be run by the government and the text message proceeds could go towards reducing the government's pocket-picking of the social security funds.

A new national holiday...Mine would be one of reflection, where we all remember the origin of the word 'holiday' (Old English - Holy Day in case I need to remind anyone).

Where only things Holy will be celebrated, not the Great Pumpkin, not the Easter Bunny, but things that bring back the true spirit of the 'Holy-Day'.

Commercialism will be banned for this day, as there is no place for financial gain in celebrating that which is Holy.  There will be spiritual gain, and that is free for the taking.

National International Get-to-know-your-neighbor Day!

Coming from a geographically and geopolitically deprived state, one which I share with many others, Americancentricity, I think it would be totally cool and tremendously helpful if we could spend one day meeting our international neighbors, finding out where they live, what they do for fun, what they do that's not fun (work, I believe), how they dress (before we all started weariing jeans), and what kinds of contributions they are making to the world - good, bad and indifferent. Oh, and food! All the yummiest digestibles associated with each land.

It could be a Festival Day, with parades and booths, and prizes. Grand Prize - one per festival at least - a trip for two to wherever you want to go in the world, provided you come back and tell everyone all about it.

Maybe with a little experiential learning we could be a bit more understanding and have a whole lot more fun!

The holiday that I think would be great would be called "Hands Across the Aisle" Day. I'm talking politics here, I hope that's OK.

On one day during the year, the Democrats and Republicans would be required to totally agree on one thing. Once they had done that, the next day would be a holiday called "Hands Across the Aisle Day", since they would be so exhausted from having to agree on something they would need a day off to recuperate. ;)

National Writer's Day

Postby writeon » Mon Jul 17, 2006 9:24 am

Imagine this country without writing
What kind of place would it be?
There would be no books
No magazines or newspapers
No bookstores or libraries

Without scripts
There would be no plays
And no movies
No theaters or Hollywood
There would be no lyrics
To the songs that we love
That inspire us and make us feel good

There would be no greeting cards
No need for Hallmark
When you care to send the very best
No emails or chat rooms
Or dating.com
No need for the Internet

There would be no notes to sweethearts
Or letters from lovers
Or journals with secrets inside
No postcards from Paris
Or poetry to share
Or wedding vows
For a husband and wife

There would be no Bible
To lead us and guide us
Or instruct us in our walk every day
No need for churches
Or Pastors or Elders
No gathering together to pray

There would be no boardgames
For children to play
Because instructions
Would never exist
This means no bicycles
For Dad's to assemble
And certainly no Christmas lists

And how could we travel
To other locations
How would we know where to go?
There would be no maps
Or driving directions
And no street signs on the roads

I haven't even mentioned
No schools and no classrooms
No colleges or universities
No need for teachers
Or tutors or students
Or learning the ABC's

Picking a holiday
Worthy to celebrate
It clearly makes sense to say
We should honor the writer
In all of us
With a National Writer's Day!

Sorry about that. I wasn't in charge of the Newsletter and prompts then, so there may be an occasional overlap. But I'll try my best to avoid it.

Holy Frijoles Batman!

I go offline a couple of weeks (harddrive self-destructed again--my tragic silicon-based karma) and return to find that I have been published. I must say that this publishing stuff is yummy delicious. I like it! Can I have some more, please?

Thanks for the congrats. Y'all rock!
