The Internet an incredible resource for research!

I know it's not very profound, but sometimes I'm beside myself when I realize how lucky I am to be a writer at this point in history, where the research resources are literally at my fingertips at the convenience of my home!

How many of you are old enough to remember having to go to a library for all your research?

Additionally I was always one that hated typewriters. It was probably that girl sitting next to me in typing class during timed typing that already typed 50 wpm. She psyched me out so badly my first three words were typos! :? Cutting, and copying and pasting on a computer has liberated me! 8-)

Yes, I am old enough to remember the old typewriters (Smith Corona) and going to the library for research.

My husband won the typing class award for the fastest typist (62 words per minute) and beat out all the girls. That was back in 1936. Yes, he's 96 soon to be 97. So as oldsters, I'm 82, we've seen the the entire industry change. And for writers like me, what great fun to be able to work at home and have the world at your fingertips.

There's also a downside. If you don't know how something works and your library can't help, you can make stuff up and no-one will know. Nowadays you can write a grand escape from Alcatraz in your novel and be emailed links to Mythbusters episodes showing exactly how it wouldn't work.

There's also the problem with piracy, of course. Books didn't get pirated quite so often when the cost and effort required to photocopy one was about the same as printing the original.

Thank you. God has been good to us.

He got his Letter Man's Jacket for jumping hurdles.

I still prefer manual typewriters, but, yes, the internet is probably the most useful and valuable communication and learning tool ever invented. But it has its downsides, too, and one of them is that a huge amount of the information online is simply wrong. You have to be extremely careful about sources.

I have to *gently* disagree with the OP. Last time I checked, nothing on the www is source-able in actual research as anything more robust than a newspaper or periodical. Just like a magazine, it's convenient as a way to informally gather leads, to give you a mere idea about what direction to start your research in. But if you're sitting at home on a comfy chair and surfing the net, that can hardly be called trained research.

A good example is a law library. No one can just walk in off the street and understand how to prepare a legal case using those vast resources. Nor will the www train you how to write a competent paper. Nor does it help you determine what--among the leads you turn up--is bonafide evidence supporting your platform.

The net doesn't just hold the good sources; it holds everything. Bad science, quack reports, or un-vetted academic twaddle; it holds all that too. Surfing the net, people tend to just grab "whatever links turn up", no matter what they actually signify. It has nothing to do with truth. The net often just gives you (as the saying goes) 'the wrong answer faster'.

So yes, this is one thing I think is a concern: people confusing the 'net with structured, formal education.

Another concern of course, is that the net destroys our certainty that students are really learning anything at all. When they can cheat their way through school using websites every which way they can, is this really the boon we think it is?

Considerably, in this highly advanced world, the internet is the source most of the people opt for anything they want to know, learn and share. Even many of the books are likewise available online in various forms. So, going to library is kind of old thing now a days. I remember going to the library with my sister as she had to organize for her interview for getting Hospitalist jobs in Ohio. I guess even my sister also did most of her study and job hunt online(Spam URL redacted. One more spam post and you'll be banned from these forums -pls.)

I have to agree with @twostepcharlie. While it is a great resource for some statistics, it is filled with a lot of with misinformation and outright lies. The news articles are little more than click bate with trolls bumping up the click count by insulting and harassing people. Not to mention how incredibly biased they are in their reporting. I am reminded of a story of somebody of some notoriety contacting Wikipedia about some incorrect information posted about himself. They would not even entertain listening to him as he was not the person that submitted the information. He told them "But that's me, and the information is wrong!" They didn't want to hear it.
