I try to avoid adjectives or telegraphing the emotion I'm trying to convey. Similes are a shortcut to that, I feel.

Dirk seemed disturbed by the turtle waltzing across the street.

Dirk glanced sidelong at the turtle, as if watching a dark figure on a street corner. The reptile glanced about like a child in a toy store as it clawed its way across the median.

Where you use telling and showing would be this then , or no?

You want to use the concept of telling a story when you want to move the pace of the story along a bit like when you are telling a story to a friend and want to pass along the proper information to frame the idea you are sharing.

BUT

You want to use the concept of showing inside of the concept of telling a story so that when you get to a great picturesque point in your story you can paint the details and really dazzle as an author and bring the reader into your world.

Could it be said that authoring a book is the telling of a story but that the adding of the fundamental value to the book is in the showing and the painting and it is in the painting and the showing that an author portrays their style in how they tell the story?

This always brings out the OMFG in me. Showing vs Telling? As though you can write a cogent, entertaining novel without both?????? PLEASE! won't somebody please just get the message out that telling is not the work o Satan! It is a necessary part of writing both in fiction and nonfiction and no more ominous nor evil than showing.

The trick is... how to weigh the balance of each in any given work? THAT's a question worth discussing. In THIS novel, you may need an abundance of showing and so telling would, in most instances, be a no-no. But, in THAT novel, you NEED more telling. So a little less showing is in order. But, anyone who beats a drum of "Show don't Tell!" simply doesn't understand what creative writing is all about.
