Writers = No Fun

Postby cosivantutte » Sat May 10, 2014 7:46 pm

It is a well-established fact that reality shows thrive on drama. Without drama, these shows would curl up their toes and die.

On American Idol, Hollywood Week is drama week. Contestants get sick, lose their voices, want to give up, don't want to give up, and sobbing so on. On America's Next Top Model, contestants get dramatic over everything from makeovers to being cooped up in one room with a bunch of competitive/not-competitive enough women. Hell's Kitchen is well past drama. It's over-drama with all of the yelling, cursing, and wracked nerves. Then, you have a show like the Real Housewives of Fill-In-The-Blank. I've never watched it, but I've heard enough about it to get the idea that these women sit around and find things to be dramatic about.

On the shows like Real Housewives or Jersey Shore, most of these dramatics occur because the contestants aren't allowed to do normal activities like reading, watching tv, and boring stuff like that. It's understandable. No one wants to watch someone watching Ghostbusters 2. So, these people spend all of their time talking and shopping and talking and talking and talking until they reach critical mass and drama stuff happens.

A reality show about a group of writers trying to finish their books would die so fast. While there is room for possible drama - power outages, mental blocks, people not understanding why they want to write instead of being on The Bachelor - most of the show would consist of a bunch of people staring earnestly into their computer screens and typing. They would barely say more than five words to each other, especially if their on a writing streak. Hmm...Maybe if they tossed in time limits for each episode. Like they have to type 1,000 words before the end of the day or pay a penalty. Even then, it still would be a show about a bunch of people not talking to each other. :lol: I'd watch it just because it would be so random.

What do you guys think?

Oh, heck! If you want to get writers riled up start a MACs vs PCs thread. Or literary vs genre fiction thread. Passive/active voice thread. Mention Stephenie Meyer and Twilight in a positive light. :mrgreen:

Anyone who doesn't think writers can be full of drama hasn't seen one receive their first critique. :D
Slowly putting together a "replacement" forum at http://writerswriting.proboards.com.

It's still under construction, but come take a look.

Chuck Palahniuk wrote about 17 writers locked into a writers retreat. It's very much like a murderous reality show.
