427965 members - really?

I was at a loose end this morning, waiting for one laundry load to finish before starting something that needed concentration, so I looked at the line of members who celebrate birthdays today. It's probably changed now, but when I checked WD claimed to have 427,965 members. Of those, one name was in blue, the other seven were red.

Here's what I found interesting:

The "blue" member joined in Oct, 2016, last visited in Nov, 2016, posted 4 times.
"Red" member 1 joined July 11, 2016, last visited the same day, 0 posts.
"Red" member 2 joined Nov 24, 2014, last visited Nov 25, 2014, 0 posts.
"Red" member 3 joined Mar 11, 2016, last visited the same day, 0 posts.
"red" member 4 joined Apr 2, 2015, last visited Apr 24, 2015, 1 post.
"Red" member 5 joined Dec 8, 2015, last visited the same day, 0 posts.
"Red" member 6 joined May 28, 2016, last visited Aug 06, 2016, 0 posts.
"Red" member 7 joined Mar 10, last visited May 21, 2016, 0 posts.

So six out of eight members made no posts at all since joining. It makes me wonder how many ACTIVE members there are.

I'm new here, but hope to be very active in the days (and years) to come!

Welcome! I look forward to seeing you join in the banter, while - of course - learning how to "Write better. Get published." :D

=======

i suspect that goes back to day 1
this forum was very active in the past

many people sign up and never show up again
lack of critical mass makes them lose interest

if they only all stayed and joined in this would be a very active forum again

plus the delay before they can post anywhere but introductions helps discourage them from returning
too bad it has to be done to fight the spammers

A lot of these members are autobot signups that would eventual post spam. Paul and I only deleted the users that posted spam. There were times when the user count would jump a thousand or more in one day.

Clearly not enough.
We need to welcome each new person.
Invite them to join the discussions.

They are being approved faster which helps. Now it is up to the current members to welcome and draw in the new folks so we can hit a critical mass to ensure continued success of the forum.

Today, my second day on the forum, I wondered what a red user name meant, and went down a rabbit hole to see why a member with three hundred something posts was red, and it was very instructional. They couldn't take advice, instruction, or suggestions about writing fiction, even though they have never published anything that I could find. So I assume they dropped out or had themselves dropped by admin because they were being such a putz.

It would be good to "clean up" the membership rolls of members who posted a couple of times and disappeared, but those like the above provide an object lesson in these days of Twitter and "post truth."

A more important statistic I'd like to hear (if it's possible to filter it out) is how many members are
1)traditionally published
2) successfully self-published
3) never published

I tried to clean out inactive users several times, but the code is so messed up it would fail every 5 to 10 users. Plus autobots add thousands of new accounts every month. Two years ago I added a new group and everyone in that group is blue. Those are the active ones and the ones that have signed up in the last 2 years. Everyone else is red because they are inactive, bots, or have not asked to be placed in the registered group. There's no way to easily clean up the user base unless WD fixes it first. And to fix it means to overhaul the entire website. No idea if that will ever happen.

I suspect that many members means the total WD web site not just the WD forum part of the web site.
I could be wrong.

How many active members?
With about 2-3 posts a day there cant be very many active ones.

I also note that a number of members visit but do not post at all.
Possibly checking for discussions of interest and not finding any to motivate their posting.

Note that 'red' 'members' can NOT post until they are approved and become 'blue'.
I wonder how many get discouraged about the delay and never come back at all.
Others may be discouraged about the lack of activity so give up.
I understand the spam problem but other sites seem to be able to control that AND let people post immediately.

Just how out of date are the folks at F+W?
Or are their financial problems the alligators stopping them from draining the swamp or fixing the forum.

Again I suspect the lack of forum activity keeps many 'active' 'blue' members from checking in very often.
And when they do they often do not post at all.
Think death spiral.

Looking back at old messages I found one member competing with the forum and soliciting people to use his own discussion site.
That could not have helped activity here.

There are often other writing sites mentioned here and in people's signatures. If you think a forum rule has been broken, feel free to report it.
