I guess it depends on! I particulary like fiction more, I never got attached to a real character enough to write about it. But I bet the process of collecting the information and everything round it must be really interesting.
I like a lot Umberto Eco non-fiction/fiction. The pendule of Foucault was incredible, even if the characters weren't real, it talked the all long story of religion in a really interesting way.
Also, it makes the tour on the Art et Metiers Museum really special
