When He’s Gone-Day 9-November 2012 PAD Challenge
by Lauren Dixon

He Can Hardly Wait to Go

When he’s gone,
The hard road he’s
Been on with its detours,
Ditches, and dead stops,
Will be over. He’ll be on
The highway to Tahoe
Where he wanted to end
Up. Where his happiest
Days played out, fishing,
Swimming, snorkeling.
He didn’t have an easy life,
Second born son, brother
To a bully. Went to dental
School, graduated, got
Married to the wrong girl,
A girl, who wanted to be
An artist, he wanted a
Stay-at-home, have-three-
Kids girl. Two girls and
a darling red haired boy later,
She did what he wanted,
the beginning of her demise,
not being able to be who you
were meant to be, she bolted,
divorced and lost, he
Married another who spent
everything, so now he has nothing
but two more boys, one
Schizophrenic, still at home,
He’s angry, angry his first boy
Died, angry his second boy
Is forever ill, angry his wife
Has breast cancer,
angry his president
Is black, angry he lives
In squalor, angry he has no
Money. What money he does
Have he sends to people who
Tell him he will be a million
Dollar winner. I take him to
Lunch when I’m in town, I
Can’t do anything for him,
That wouldn’t jeopardize
My own future, so a day
Away from his reality is all
I can do. He appreciates it,
He is looking forward to
When he is gone.

Again, TwitFic style, 140 characters or fewer.

The moon that shines so brightly when he's here
casts the darkest shadows when he's gone.

I am NOT typing too fast. I will NOT slow down.

Better late than...you know.

Gone

When he’s gone, she marks his absence by unfilled spaces,
his slot in the carport nothing but a spot of grease,
his chair sits cold, the indentations of his rump intact,
his pillow lies waiting, his water glass waits empty,
the silence throbs, and she thinks she hears the click
of toenails of a dog long buried in the back yard,
his ghost in the upstairs hall, pacing, wary. The moon
plays peeping tom, one eye on their window,
beams reaching across his side of the bed, lighting
her hand resting there, saving the place for him.

When she’s gone, he paces, rummages through the closet,
the dryer, stands and stares into the pantry, gives up,
calls and orders takeout. Every question justifies a call
just to check, to ask how to work the remote, the timer
on the oven, where she put the number he gave her to file.
He rearranges the chairs, stacks and unstacks the books
she keeps beside the bed, flipping through, reading
the last pages of a couple. When she gone, he forgets
to check the mail, leaves the papers piling up in the drive.
He waters her flowers just before she’s due back home.

When they’re home, they sometimes sit for hours, quiet,
comfortably aware of the other’s presence, within reach.
The silence is benevolent, asking for nothing from either
but cozy companionship as they move through their days,
like old dancers with the dance steps in their bones.
When they’re home, bathed in lamplight, engaged
in the call and response that is love's language,
as the house embraces them, as night caresses,
they sometimes wonder why they ever left.

Alegria Imperial

when he's gone

a chasm in the wind
will wash over every sunrise
and every wave and rustle
of sedge when he’s gone

any patch of grass
will turn muddy marsh
where shells of scalloped
clams lie on their side

a spot of sunshine
becomes a murky puddle on steps
reflecting a fractured sky
when he’s gone

every path
is taken over by crows
that taunt sorrowing shadows
to unburden

when he’s gone
the moon loses its smiles
floating like a widow tossed
in tangled maps of the heart

what remains
is a quiet eye waiting
for the sunset to stop
when he’s gone

SHE'S NOT SURE WHAT TO DO
(c) 2012 - G. Smith
-----------------------------------------------------
She's not sure what to do
When he's gone.
Is it for good? Or just an hour or two?
She's not sure what to do.

She knows she's tired of feeling lonesome and blue,
And she's not sure how long this can go on.
She's not sure what to do,
When he's gone.
