I posted this on the blog as well

A Cry to No One

When he’s gone
she picks herself up
and sweeps up the pieces
of her shattered life

When he’s gone
she tells herself
it was her fault
and believes it

When he’s gone
she covers the bruises
with makeup and lies
and forgives him again

But when he’s there
she lives in fear
and tries to hide
from the monster within.

The Last

The numbers dwindle,
for even the youngest
of those who sacrificed
their youth for a
greater good are now
octogenarians.
There will be a last.
A last who remembers
first hand the shock
of the attack.
A last who headed to
the recruiting office
the next day.
A last who ran onto
the beaches or dropped
behind enemy lines.
A last who remembers
the faces of those
who were liberated.
And when he’s gone,
the buddies he lost
so long ago
will clap him
on the shoulder,
give him a knowing nod
and say, “Well done.”

JW, I replied to your poem on the other forum, but was booted. What I said was that I find your take on the prompt refreshing.

Under a Mask

When he’s gone her stereo’s loud
Dylan, The Stones, and Magic Cloud
And oh, those trips that take a week
Though she acts morose and even meek
The instant he’s gone, she stands unbowed

His austerity demands his proud
Countenance, but leaves her cowed
She dutifully turns the other cheek
When he’s gone

When he’s at home, and often plowed
Her curvature must wear a shroud
But when he’s gone, her physique
Like her spirit, begins to speak
In rapt attention, her doting crowd
When he’s gone

WHEN

When he is gone
thoughts will linger
as days grow long.
When he is gone
I’ll listen for that song
and remember
a soft breeze at dawn.
When he is gone
thoughts will linger.

When He's Gone

He has this way
of sidling up behind
you—you not noticing his arrival.
That little smirch
on his face, and just the

touch of a wink.
And already you are
reeled in by
the way any party lights
up when he makes his

appearance (as if he
didn't know that he
could cast his spell
from behind the curtain
just as well.)

But when he really turns
on the charm, he
can play the room
like a Stradivarius. And as
you long for him to

look your way, he does.
When his eyes catch yours—you
cannot bear to pull away—he
beguiles you with
epic stories; you not

noticing that his attention
has already begun to wander.
And just as you are ready
to fly away with him
among the stars

you look over your
shoulder and realize that
he is gone.
So you walk the beach
awaiting his return—while

working on a
potion to capture him
forever when
sneaks up on you
next month. Ellen Knight 11.9.12

For some unknown reason, after months of posting to the Poet Asides blog, I have comments awaiting moderation.

edit: okay not an unknown reason any longer; it's because I changed my name to appear from JWLaviguer to JW Laviguer. I wonder what will happen if I change it back?

Nov 9: Use the phrase "When he's gone"

When He's Gone

Alas, my laptop, Joe, is dead.
He tripped and fell right on his head.
The light went off. I almost cried,
the night my laptop, Joseph, died.

I had another laptop, Lou.
Unfortunately, he's finished, too.
I spilled some coffee on his head,
and now my laptop, Lou, is dead.

Alas, I fear I'll be offline
until November 12 at nine
AM when I return to work,
and leap onto my desktop, Kirk.

So for a time, I bid adieu
while I consider what to do:
to buy another or repair
or find someone who has a spare.
