2012 November PAD Chapbook Challenge Days 1-7

Postby Robert Lee Brewer » Wed Nov 07, 2012 2:59 pm

OK. I know moving from one spot to another for sharing poems usually doesn't work out that well, but the Poetic Asides group is so supportive and the blog comments are so wonky that I want to give this a try to see if it helps poets share their work and comments on other poems. I'm not too optimistic the commenting issue on the blog will be fixed, because I've heard through the grapevine that it has something to do with the WordPress functionality (I'm not a techie, so don't ask).

Here's the deal: For the first week of prompts, feel free to share here. Each day for the rest of the challenge, I'll open up a thread for that corresponding day as well. And we'll see how it goes.

Thank you for your patience and awesomeness!

Robert

Fantastic idea! I'm still working on prompts for a couple of days, but here's what I've got so far.
~Mary Mansfield

Day 1 prompt - write a matches poem

The Rogue Gods of Domestic Chaos

They send forth their minions
Who invade under the cover of the spin cycle,
Stealing socks and spiriting them away
Into the nether regions of the laundry,
Transforming cotton-woolen blends
Into wire coat hangers,
Those distorted instruments bent
On staging a clothing coup
And seizing control of our closets,
Leaving a path of disarray
Through our carefully constructed household bliss.

And that’s why you don't have any matched socks, dear.

Day 3 prompt - write a poem that scares you

Never Alone

In this realm
Of unnatural darkness,
Caution is demanded.
I know I am not alone.
I hear footsteps,
Perhaps a spectral silhouette
Wandering
In search of retribution
For the sins of the past,
Unseen voices
Swirling around me
In guttural whispers,
The frigid breath
Of undetected demons
Chilling my bones.
I see eyes glowing
In the pitch black,
Always watching me,
A solitary soul
Caught in evil’s sight.

Day 4 prompt - write a poem titled "Just Beneath (Blank)"

Just Beneath her Surface

Just beneath her surface
Discontent simmers,
The secret sorrow
That fuels hidden tears
For her sacrificed dreams,
All hidden
By her delusive smile.

Day 6 prompt - write a right or left poem. (Note: this is a poetic explanation about the name of my blog, Write Wing Conspiracy)

Write, Not Right

For more than a decade
Pundits have spoken
Of the great right wing conspiracy,
Those evil capitalists
Lurking in the shadows
Seeking to seize power
Regardless of the cost,
Heartless bastards
Fueled by greed,
Willing to sacrifice
Anyone weaker
To better shape the world
According to their insidious schemes.

I speak of a different quest,
My write wing conspiracy:
A mission to illustrate my vision
Of triumph and disappointment
Both at a personal level
And also on a grander scale.
Words hold power,
And one poem at a time
Every poet possesses
The power
To change the world.

Full Circle

11/7/12

When an infant,
he wears diapers.
sees little,
has no teeth,
eats liquid diet,
depends on care from others,
cries often,
is immobile.

In old age he becomes immobile,
cries often,
depends on care from others,
eats liquid diet,
has no teeth,
sees little and
wears diapers.

Hoop It Up

When does a circle
become a hoop?
Is it a title of
distinction?
One could wear
circle earrings,
but would a
game of circles
create as much hoopla
as a game of hoops?
Would children play
with hula circles
or hold hands to
form a hoop?
This discussion may be
just a vicious circle--or hoop.

Thanks, Robert... been on the road some, but trying to keep up...

Here's my day 7... day 6 to follow (like a countdown?)

g

------------------------------
ROUND AND ROUND
(A Pantoum)
(c) G. Smith
-------------------------------
Round and round I go
Spinning like a top;
Where I'll stop, who know,
How hard will I drop?

Spinning like a top
I teeter at the brink.
How hard will I drop?
I don't have time to think.

I teeter on the brink,
Of seeing you again.
I don't have time to think:
A beginning or the end

Of seeing you again?
Where I'll stop, who knows:
The beginning or the end?
Round and round I go.

Round and round I go,
Spinning like a top;
Where I'll stop, who knows...

Loved reading those!

I am experimenting with Twitter-sized fiction/poetry; hence, they will all likely be <140 characters. Can't say they all turned out well, but I had fun with a couple of them. :)

Day 1 - Matches
Freeform

After a quiet, forgotten slumber, it bursts into life; then, just as quickly, it's spent and discarded, forgotten again.

Day 2 - Full Moon
Freeform

The Cheshire moon was gone; in its stead reigned the ghost of something far more sinister - and hungry.

Day 3 - Scary
Freeform

It pinned me to the ground, black drool dripping from its skeletal mouth as it searched for the tenderest flesh.

Day 4 - Just Beneath
Freeform

The weeping willow sways in silent mourning, a soft wind whirling its listless limbs, a sinister secret buried just beneath its branches.

Day 5 - Text Messages
SMS Syntax

Me: RU there?
Me: Wish u would answer.
Me: Idk why I keep trying.
Me: But this is all I have left of u.
Me: Wish u were still here.

Day 6 - Left or Right
Haiku

One side left, one right. / If they don't find common ground / everyone loses.

Day 7 - Circular
(I don't know if there is a term for a 5x5 poem... Five Squared? 5^2?)

The sun and the moon
twirled across the sky
in an endless dance,
forbidden lovers,
never united.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Robert. This should definitely help restore the collaboration I have come to know and love.

Day1:
No Contest
By: Meena Rose

Go ahead!
Betray me, stab me;
Sabotage me, just try me!

A lesson in leverage!
Push me, shove me;
Just try to dislodge me!

My stance is firm!
Woo me, fool me;
Won’t work, I know me!

You can’t sway me;
You can’t break me;
Clearly, you’re no match for me!

Day 2:
Heavenly Pearl
By: Meena Rose

Life’s hustle and life’s bustle
Could not interfere
With the forceful sway
You hold over my being.

Oh, Heavenly Pearl,
Adorned and sustained by
Sun’s blazing furnace;
A tempered polished beauty.

I submit to you and your
Heavenly point of view;
Truth’s seer and power’s balm;
An all encompassing Pearl.

By Moon’s bright light
My spirit soars and
Surfs cosmic waterways
Infused with iridescent insight.

Day 3:
Will They?
By: Meena Rose

I look back upon
Where I have been and
Whence I have come;
A journey of a lifetime.

A nagging unspoken
Pervasive fear is
Deeply entrenched upon
My psyche.

When I die, will they
Remember me or will
My imprints upon this
Life evaporate into ether?

When I die, will there
Be a marker to note
My passage upon this
Celestial ship?

Death and I have courted
Each other as far back
As I can remember;
Quite the chivalrous display.

Through pain and tears;
Through sheer stubbornness;
I hang on – my work not yet done;
To leave an indelible mark

Upon the semi-permanence of
Human recollection racing
Against the draining sands of
Time.

Day 4:
Just Beneath A Smile
By: Meena Rose

A smile is a smile,
Someone once said.
I disagree.

A smile is a sentry
If you ask me;
Veiling intent

Often betrayed by
Tell tale eyes.
Exuding warmth or

Chilling upon sight;
Tread with care -
Alluring eyes bind

Emotions so deep
Roiling them in a
Tempest of desire.

A smile is a smile,
Someone once said.
I disagree.

Day 5:
Digital Love
By: Meena Rose

I <3 u, bay-b hey luv, <3 u2

4ever nd ever? longer dan ever :*

wanna no bout Lyf? tell mii

Lyf iz gud wid u cu@8 GTG boss iz here

Day 6:
When The Dust Settles
By: Meena Rose

When all that is left
Is but a husk – empty and hollow,
Consumed by ashes of memories now gone,
Releasing echoes of a life lived in full,
Yearning for a wraith’s last lingering kiss,

Step right in to
Fill a void overwhelmed in sorrow,
Breathe new life into the hollowed bone,
Embrace a soul with the touch of soft wool,
Gently reminisce and pull the heart out of the abyss.

Day 7:
Born of Fire
By: Meena Rose

Your kiss, oh sweet bliss,
It has no beginning and knows no end.

That velvet touch of your finger
Traces lazy circles upon my back.

My love for you – where does it
Begin and where does it end?

That thought runs around in my head
Till you pull me deeper as I spiral

Under the here and now – destination unknown;
Entranced, breathless and on fire.

Day 1: Match
“Made Hand”
Marked prematurely, false terror in my eyes
A trap surely, rethink your alibis
Time to fold your cards; I know exactly what you are
Chill down my spleen, unlock this player’s latch
He’ll go grab the kerosene, and I’ll go grab the…

Day 2: Moon
“Mortal Night”

I lay beside you as I sleep
Can this mortal night I keep
I pray for darkness forever
That we may always lie together
Oh sweet Philomel come sing your song
For in this bed I eternally belong
In your arms caressed by your breath
That we may lie here till our death
Thick stars may be our only light
As the soot filled canvas shades our night
And the night eye shines its’ noon
And celestial darkness fills this room
In your arms embrace me tight
As you sleep through this lovely night
Oh hail Philomel, sing again
Force this night to never end
Hail nightingale—hail
Your song I regret has failed
Out our window the branch is bare
Oh nightingale, why aren’t you there?
What is that which perverts my corridor?
That spirit that leaks onto this floor?
What is that I hear? Tweet! Tweet!
That racket which disturbs my sleep
That bird on that branch has murdered my night
A skylark has brought this spirit of light
That bird which forced night to shut its’ eye
I will seek vengeance that every skylark die
Oh nightingale, why must you flee
Come and return this night to me

Day 3: Fear
“Misunderstanding”

The sky darkens, hot rain falls
It’s dark out, but there’s nowhere to hide
Oceans boil and forests burn
Noxious air permeates
Rotting flesh poisons
It’s too late for a sinner’s prayer
The master clock has ticked its last tock
The heavens split and we fall to the ground
I thought I wouldn’t be here, to hear that trumpet sound

Day 4--Prompt: "Just Beneath the _______"
“Just Beneath the Bell Curve”

Always reaching, not quite breaching
Above—the brightest goes
Esteem undressing, not impressing
Supercilious foes

Wits bereave and underachieve
Lest these thoughts give treason
Assay tough books or rely on looks
Should one forgo reason

Quash dominions, quell opinions
Below—the weak observe
High arcs to court, thus coming up short
Just beneath the bell curve

Day 5—Promt: Text Poem
"BYTM"

Me: Otwh, wut4din?
Sis: Idk, not in kchn
Me: go ?
Sis: ugh, brb
Me: …
Me: hi mom wut4din?
Mom: Hi corn feet rashh
Me: lol huh?
Mom: omg, corn beef hash!
Me: ha! my fav k sys <3
Me: lmbo sis, Ms a dork
Mom: I got that!
Me: my bad @--->--- x12
Me: oops snt M twt
Sis: IKS! Dins dun. Btw ur in trbl! ha! BYTM

Day 6 Left & Right
"One Left Missing”

Inside a circle going ‘round
I run away then back to you
No left or right, up or down
You make it difficult to choose

Let’s not wave this flag at half mast
I think we can see this through
If we left it all in the past
Staying seems the right thing to do

Fractured moments in your eyes
Tell me your heart’s wearing thin
Let’s do this right, no more lies
It’s not time for us to give in

You were right when we started
When I left and since departed

Day 7
"Disc"

Eclectic
Music inside us
Plays the story of our lives
On this circular disc, holds secrets
Only shared by us, only known by us
As it spins around and ‘round, we kiss
Run your hands through my hair
I listen to your beating chest
In your arms I feel at rest
You are my sprite
My muse
