Climax->Falling Tension->End...am I thinking correctly?

Postby KnightWriter » Fri Sep 12, 2014 10:04 am

Okay guys (and ladies too), I think I was told that I have the correct thinking about it, but I wanted to make sure. Remember how on The Twilight Zone there'd be plenty of dialogue with feeling, and sparse action with little or sometimes no backstory? A lot of episodes had the main climax towards the last ten minutes of the show with a sharp dropoff in falling tension where the ending is implied instead of being obviously stated. And, often times, a lot of people ended up "losing" against the supposed monster but you still felt for the protagonist. Is this a correct way of looking at Rod Serling's strategy?

Reason I ask is because in the flash horror I've mentioned previously has my protagonist climbing and falling down from prison walls with interspersed backstory. And, like Serling, my main climax is towards the end where the MC comes face to face with the monster outside of the prison with the implied meaning that he isn't going anywhere. I didn't want to sound like a rip-off since I want to combine other spices of horror in the story (like from Silent Hill and other stories I've mentioned as well) and I don't want to approach horror the wrong way considering it's my first time.

imo, you're only thinking incorrectly by thinking you need to give a bleep about how serling wrote his stories, instead of just writing yours the way you feel they should be written...

worrying about what you're worring about serves no good purpose and there's no 'right' way or 'wrong' way to approach horror or anything else in writing... there's only what works and what doesn't... and that varies from one story to the next...

Well, The Twilight Zone had fifty types of tales, ranging from tragedy to comedy. The climax is toward teh end of any tale, of any kind, but if you;re asking what I think you are, then, that's certainly one good way of doing it. But remember that Serling wrote all sorts of tales, and so did all the contributors to TZ.

Many, many of the tales on there, possibly the most common, had nothing to do with horror. Certainly the most popular didn't. The most popular were either about redemption, or courage, or "see, you really didn't want what you thought you did".

Serling is a great role model, but don't lock him, or TZ into one kind of tale, with one kind of structure, and one kind of ending.
