How should YA Fantasy Characters Speak?

Postby caylableoaja » Wed Feb 27, 2013 11:54 pm

I read that characters in Young Adult Characters should not speak like modern day characters. However, I don't prefer reading dialogue that is all fancy and complicated. So what do you think would be best for my fantasy characters? Should they talk like characters in the bestselling fantasy Eragon? Or can they talk normally -- as in, "sheesh" or "Yea, right"?

You might want to post this in the YA or SFF boards.

They should speak however you want them to speak, though if they speak like california surfer dudes, you will lose most of your potential audience, and if they speak like rejects from a Renaissance Fair you will lose a different segment of your potential audience.

Use current, generic English unless you want readers to deal with archaic speech and colloquialisms. Dude.
