Sending manuscript before having an agent

Postby Tigerlilly79 » Sun May 06, 2012 8:10 pm

I finished my first novel and just sent out my first round of queries to agents this week. I just came across an imprint to a major publisher that is accepting submissions in my specific genre. They want the entire manuscript with a cover letter. My question is should I send it in now or wait until I secure an agent which I know could take a really long time?

Before sending a manuscript to any publisher, I'd strongly suggest checking http://pred-ed.com/peba.htm to determine whether or not the publisher is legit. If said publisher hints strongly that your manuscript may be publishable but suggests revision for a fee, you may be dealing with a scammer.

but if it is legit, i'd say go ahead and send it... if they offer you a contract, you can use that to snag an agent, who'll then most likely be able to negotiate a better one for you than you can get on your own...

Thanks for your comments. Yes, it's definitely legit.
