Is it okay to use a movie title in my novel?

Postby Tigerlilly79 » Mon Apr 30, 2012 5:03 pm

My main character is a horror movie fanatic and I want to mention her favorite movie. Can I use a the title of a movie that actually exists or do I have to make one up?

TIA

yes, there's no law against it... you should learn the basics of copyright issues... go here for the official skinny: www.copyright.gov

I think it is okay to mention the title of a movie as long as you don’t falsely represent it. If you do not depict the film in any offensive manner, there’ll be no problem. You said you are going to use the name to put in the picture the main character’s fondness to horror films, right? Then I guess, those who made the movie will actually feel good about it. :)

My first editor made me remove an actor's name and describe him by association.

were you given a reason for the removal?... had you used the actor's name in a derogatory manner?

Old thread here but just caught my attention...

I have another related question - would it be possible to use a brands symbol/ insignia (say BMW's car badge) in a novel where said company, say, took over the world or something?

Thanks
G

BMW would be delighted to see the brand used in a novel, movie, etc. It's called "product placement". (Maybe you could use the title of one of my novels in your next novel, as in "The hot model languidly stretched her legs, dipped her dark glasses, laid aside her copy of "Xxxxxmynoveltitle", and winked at the hunky hero.")
