An emotion is where you are developing feeling, if you are trying to writer someones emotion, think of something sad, or happy which ever emotion that you are trying to display. I hope that helps, and that I have understood your question.

an 'emotion' is what you feel... an 'emoticon' is the character equivalent of what paul shows in his post... this one [ ;- ) ] is a 'winker' and this [ :- ) ] is a smiley face, this [ :- ( ] is a sad face...

you can google for 'list of emoticons' and see them all...

Emoticon refers to emotional icon. These icons are the modern form of written expressions which people frequently use when chatting, sending email and text messages, and other informal writing. These are widely used in social networking sites, as well. At one period in the history, people made use of journals, tablets and hieroglyphs to express their feelings. Nowadays, this can be done by combining symbols or merely clicking on any of these emoticons.
