Italics supplied

I have come across this term several times while reading "Tesla" by Margaret Cheney. Here is an example:

"... we would like to request that we be advised of any attempt by any other agency to obtain them." [Italics supplied.]

Does this mean that the author supplied the italics, or that the italics were in the document that she was quoting?

If the comment had been "Italics applied" I would have assumed the author had added them.

"Italics supplied" is probably a shortened version of "italics added by author".
