Locations / Time / Flashbacks

Postby bupaje » Sun Sep 27, 2015 5:20 pm

Hi everyone. I haven't been around in a bit but had a novice question I thought you could help me with.

I have flashbacks in my story and also several locations, so there will be some jumping around. I have read and experimented with several ways of making sure people know where/when they are in a chapter but wondered if it is also 'ok' (realizing that there may not be an ironclad rule) to just have a subheading in each chapter, or perhaps divide the book into sections, so that I can do

The Vale of Someplace, Year 1200, SomeMonth (or season or significant event)

I've read some books that did stuff like this but wanted to know your thoughts. fantasy/Sci-Fi genre if that is relevant.

Thanks,

Burt

I think that works best when there are many leaps in time. If chapters typically immediately follow each other in chronology, I don't think you need it.

Thanks @DrG2. It felt like 'cheating' There are a couple flashbacks for each main character and a couple location changes as events happen in different parts of the world so I'll have to play will all options to make sure the reader doesn't get confused I think.

With that many flashbacks and location changes, I think your proposed method would work well. Many novels use similar methods, and they do help avoid reader confusion.
