Resubmitting to agents

I finished my novel, and the ending has one of the characters perish. Originally, this was to be motivation going forward for the protagonist. After some advice and much rethinking, I was able to come to a positive ending for the novel while keeping the series with on the path I intended. Having originally submitted to agents with my novel's depressed ending, how or do I resubmit with the more positive ending?

I've been told you shouldn't resubmit the same novel (even if you revised it) unless the agent encouraged you to resubmit. Of course, if you submitted it to all possible agents that represent your genre, that would be a problem.

unless an agent mentioned the downer ending and specifically asked you to resubmit the ms after rewriting it, you've burned your bridges with those you queried for that book...
