My Writing Space/Needs/Rules

1: I must sit in the old, battered arm chair in the living room. If I sit on the sofa, or anywhere else, I cannot concentrate on my work.

2: I must listen to Ratatat's Classics album. I shall always start by listening to Lex. Shuffle mode is completely forbidden.  If that is not available, Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run album will suffice in a pinch.

3: I must use my 5 or 6 year old Apple PowerBook G4. I will not use the desktop in the basement.

4: I must use Word. No TextEdit or Pages.

5: I must have the wireless connected to the laptop, in case I need to look something up in Google or Wikipedia, such as Russian swear words or the Christian angelic hierarchy.

6: I must write a minimum of five paragraphs every time I open up my story.

Those are my laws of writing. They must be followed by myself. Feel free to use any of them.

I listen to Mazzy Star's So Tonight That I Might See CD. I put it on repeat. If not that, I turn the tv to the Music Choice channel that plays classical masterpieces.

I love your six disciplines. I haven't found that magic chair though. My desk will suffice until I do.

OMG RATATAT!!!!

While it's not a law for me Lex is just about my favorite song by them. Also in the world. The best song ever. I am a cheapskate however and use pandora, but the only stations I have are my "Ratatat" station and my "Bomba Estereo" station (latin music from America del sur). I can only concentrate when listening to some good electronic/classical instrumentals or tango.

Also, I've recently discovered Scrivener. Wow...dude...try it out..srsly

I write best when no one else is around. Not because they interrupt, but simply because I keep having the feeling they're looking over my shoulder. 8-) I also like to have the TV on - not that I'm watching it or even listening to it. I just need something to concentrate against. Music is a big no-no, though. I spend more time singing/humming along instead of working.

I write on a small 1930's enamel-ware kitchen table in the back little-bitty bedroom. I have no rules about my writing. I just put butt in chair and write. Only noise is if the TV is on in the sitting room. I do find inspiration from looking out the window into my back yard.

When editing I move into the kitchen. Seems like the physical change helps me to move from writer to editor. Also it's a larger table so I have room to spread out. I know it's all in my head but it works for me.

I write in the living room on my laptop. There's a desk in there but I usually sit in the recliner, the couch or on the floor. Most of the time I prefer silence!

I HAVE to have my headphones in. My wife and dog(and two cats) run around doing whatever they gotta do. So I've found that If I have the music turned down a bit, but my headphones in, Danni can marathon seasons of Army wives and the biggest loser and I'll be none the wiser.

Keep writing!

Apparently I can't have rules for my writing space. It depends on what part of things I'm doing. Brainstorming or trying to figure out a problem with a scene means I'm pacing & mumbling a lot & writing on my marker boards. Lots of muttering & this is done best in my office. I have a copper colored office.

When I'm writing I can do that either in the office with my desk mascot in her little bed - my mascot is a little black cheewamee (aka chihuahua) named Sweetie who is in charge of peeping out now & again to give me big eyes, giant ears & to go back into hiding if things seem too hot. I think Sweetie thinks she's secretly a mole -or maybe a superhero- but that's a book all unto itself. Sweetie is also in charge of reading when I'm starting to go cross eyed. Apparently I don't have sense enough to realize this on my own. I've been at it too long & need a break but seem incapable of figuring it out so Sweetie will start bugging me with her 'time to get off the desk' notions. This is the high sign for me to take a break. I need to get a bite to eat, watch some tv, take a little walk. Then at the point I've had an hour break... she's looking at me like I should get back to work. Yeah okay... so off we go back to the desk.

But there are times I just don't get inspired in the copper office. Sometimes I take the laptop in the living room & I put my head phones on & something low in my ears - I do better with tv shows than music- & off I go to fictionland. Editing for me is best done in short spurts. If my husband's home then it's best if I send him off to play poker on facebook or something otherwise I write in small spurts - more like notes & then when I reread, I develope the spurts.

The last time i had rules in my writing spaces... I didn't write a single word for 3 months. Thought I was going to lose my mind. I threw out the rules & got back to my normal insanity. Apparently Sweetie is in charge. I'm in charge of getting my butt in the chair. LOL

I write primarly in two places.

On metro I can only write if no one is in the next seat - obviously even if I get on at Vienna and early that does not last long. If I can start a poem and some sits down I can keep writing. It's only if the train is already full when I start the poem that my mind seizes up. LOL I used to think it' was going into the tunnel that I could write above ground but that was before the metro got more crowded and I was nope it's the seat issue.

At home I wite on my bed spreading out two notebooks. One notebook I write to music vidioes on tv - found a classic station that runs ballet bits, opera, classic and jazz videos. If that doesn't work I try to write a new form take a haiku and turn it into a cascade or turn free verse into a pantoun.

Either way when writing at home have to have music either the classic video station or new age/celtic cds. Only instruments - vocals interfere with my writing down thoughts.

And finally when I am entering/editing into the computer must have new age - preferablly kamal whale meditation.
