one book I really enjoyed when I was her age was _The Girl who Owned a City_ by OT Nelson. It's postapocolyptic in a world where all people over the age of 12 have died and the kids left have to fend for themselves.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Jacqueline Wilson. If you go to her website www.jacquelinewilson.co.uk, click on the 'Books' tab and then click on the 12+ button there are a few books listed on there.
