Mythology Books

Postby AJW009 » Mon Apr 18, 2016 3:28 am

Hi guys, a large part of my books will be ancient mythology based, and I've done a lot of reading around this, but some mythologies are easier to research than others, so I was hoping you could all help me. Maybe we can do a recommendation swap of some sort, as I've read a number of mythology books already, from all over the world.

These are the kind of things I'm looking for:
For Mesopotamian Mythology, the hardest to research, I REALLY need some sort of A-Z of the gods, the more exhaustive the better, as well as a book detailing the myths of Mesopotamia, both major and minor, with evaluation included. I have a book that translates the major myths like the Flood, Gilgamesh and the Creation of the World, but I'd like an evaluation of them, and because I don't have the background knowledge of the Gods, I can't follow along anyway.

For Japanese Mythology, I'd like a book dedicated to the "Little Traditions" of Japan, which is a term anybody who has read about Japanese Mythology will understand, as well as another A-Z of the Gods.

For Norse Mythology, I need simply a book detailing the Gods, as well as the Myths. I have found a number of books that look as though they satisfy these needs, but it's hard to know which ones to go for, and they're too expensive to just take a pot luck chance with them.

Finally, for Egyptian Mythology, I need, yet again, some kind of A-Z of the Gods. The Myths are less important for the Egyptian side of things, as I've got a brilliant book by Toby Wilkinson called "The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt" that looks at the entirety of Ancient Egypt's 3,000 year history, that has some of the worlds earliest fairy tales, and from what I've seen from my research, there are so few actual myths as we'd understand it, as the Pharoahs served the role of heroes in the mold of Heracles, Achilles and Gilgamesh, but if you know of a book that suggests otherwise, I'd love to hear about it! :)

That's enough to be getting on with, but there's always more books I need-I just wish I had the room for them all!!!!

I take it for granted that you have Googled for these mythologies. I'm sorry I can't help. My only mythology resource is my grandson's collection of Ray Riordan's books. I hope you find what you are looking for.
Read samples of my Martian series (by Dorothy Piper) and two romances (by Joni Havel) on Smashwords.
Hard copies of all are on Amazon.

Wikipedia is the fastest resource I've found for researching mythology -- who became who, who ate who, who seduced who with a swan.

I'll second Wikipedia as a starting source, then you can examine their footnotes for further research.

The Ark Before Noah by Irving Finkel is an interesting book. It goes back and combs over Assyrian and Babylonian as well as Sumerian cultures and their Gods. If you want to take a real leap and some of his interpretations are now being proven as more accurate than once thought, Zecharia Sitchin, The 12th Planet and the Earth Chronicle series are heavily steeped in ancient mythology.

The Noah book is non-fiction. like greek and roman gods, there is a similar cross with the gods of the middle east. Sitchin, was an expert on Sumerian culture which is where the Assyrians and Babylonians derived their mythologies from. The issue with Sitchin isn't that he doesn't know about the Gods - he's an expert in the field and you'll find his hierarchies and such about the Gods are very much in line with traditional views - the issue was always with how he interpreted the stories.
