I haven't read a self-published novel yet. I will at some time in my life. There's just too many traditionally published novels to read.

There is the other school of thought that has validity to it, and that is, if you price your work like an amateur then you will most likely be taken as such. Go forward with confidence that your product is worth the fare and you might be surprised at how well you will be received. I personally have no desire to read works that are priced at .99. I've read too many bad reviews that express critical analysis of the faults of such works to stay away. However, I've read work and more so, reviews of work priced more competitively that showed promise and had far less critical qualms with the quality of said work. Tell you what, go read a James Wesley Rawles book - aside from the fact that he is traditionally published and for the most part, well copy edited, his work is mostly unreadable. His claim to fame is that he is wildly popular in the world of 'survivalists' and has a heavily trafficked blog. This shows that it isn't so much the writing but rather the business side of writing that really counts when it comes to $$$$ - you bring'em, we'll feed'em. Yes, I would agree that a vast amount of traditionally published books are out because of talent but there are also a great many out there that simply aren't. Sometimes I wonder if some writers are actually better query/synopsis writers than they are at crafting the actual novel.

Also there was a self-published author that was nominated for HUGO. She declined the nomination because of all the controversy this year. In the end George R.R. Martin gave her special award. Not to shabby for a self-pubber.

I read that the Martian was initially self published. Read it over the summer. Excellent. However, if you like description (the science aside) you aren't getting much here - very bare bones but highly entertaining.

There are so many books that I just don't read self published ones. If they were in my local B&N then maybe, but I personally don't buy books online. The only electronic books I read are the ones that are free, usually prior to 1900. I have a small but growing library of books I'll never get too. If I was a faster reader, then maybe I'd have to room. A speed reader I am not. If I read 25 novels a year that's a good year.

I have read books from smaller publishers.

A Less Than Golden Life: Finding Meaning in the Average Life Story. It is a great, easy read written by my friend.
