Kickstarter: the answer to no budget?

Postby mfarraday » Sat Aug 03, 2013 4:24 pm

I am finishing my 2nd novel shortly (3rd, if you count Nano 2012, but that one never was finished, actually) and am wondering about self publishing, after I have gone through several rounds of edits of course and hired a cover artist, etc.

Ideally, I'd like to get this done professionally, but can't really afford editor's rates. Should I start a Kickstarter campaign? I have about 400 followers on Twitter, but I really hate the idea of 'recruiting' my innocent, unsuspecting followers to contribute to any sort of campaign. I'm the type to 'announce it once or twice and i'm done.' Any ideas of what to do?

Is Kickstarter just like DonorsChoose, except for non-education-oriented projects?

Thanks,

M.

In my humble opinion the best publicity in self publishing is to just write another book. It is a number game in which the most effective publicity is to have a lot of material available. Spamming twitter, I think, is a waste of time. I just read an article over the weekend that FaceBook and an author web page are the favorite ways for readers to find authors and that if you have a limited amount of time and money to spend on publicity you should spend your efforts there. I have a facebook account under one of my pen names that consists, for now, of mostly other writers. I am going to step up my posting on that facebook account. I am also going to try to post once a week on that same pen names blog, then link to FaceBook. In the meantime I am just focusing on writing, editing and publishing. I am in year three of self publishing and am starting to see some meaningful income from it, thought still far from making a living from it. That, I think, is in the future.
In answer to your question, IN MY OPINION, if you choose to self publish, spend your time focusing on writing and getting more things published and less time annoying your twitter friends.

Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it. :) I will do a 2nd draft after I am done with this 1st one, but still...will need an editor in the next 12 months, probably.

I try to write for about one hour a day and can average about 1000 to 1500 words per day. At that rate over 50 weeks you can write three to four 80,000 word novels. Don't be limited to one novel per year. It will take you many, many years to be successful at that rate. I have seen estimates that you need at least 20 titles per pen name to have even a decent chance that people will find your books. From my experiences that may be about right, maybe a little low.
I am able to spend two to three hours a day revising and editing. I generally let a novel sit unseen for a few months after writing before I look at it again. Generally what I am editing and revising is a year old. At that rate I can kick out three to four novels a year, plus a few short stories. In my spare time I work on nonfiction garden and travel books. All of these books sell, including the short stories sell. I try to constantly improve the format of the ebooks, the covers and also the PODs I am converting many of my novel and short story collections to. That is one advantage to self publishing. You learn new things and it is easy to go back and change your book to reflect the improvements.
Most of what I read about self publishing on various writer sites is the more productive you are the better chance people have of finding your work and reading it. One or two books in Smashwords or Amazon chances are people will not find. Unless you are lucky.
So if you wish to become successful at self publishing you will have to put up a lot of stuff. In my opinion, anyway. So keep writing and just don't stop. I think you also have to experiment a bit with different genres to find the one you write best in. Try a few short stories, too. I don't do them well, but they do sell. The collections of five or ten sell best, plus they give you more titles for people to find. Make sure you put all of the titles available by that author in each and every ebook so people know what to search for.
Sorry, done preaching now. I can get a little carried away, sometimes'

Slowly putting together a "replacement" forum at http://writerswriting.proboards.com.

It's still under construction, but come take a look.

Y'know, criticism I can handle but when it is delivered in such a kiss my @%# condescending attitude it is really uncalled for. Apparently you eat jackass pills for breakfast. If you don't like it, fine. Then don't read it. And if you have criticism, fine, but find a better delivery method than standing looking down your nose at someone you apparently feel is inferior. I am sorry I offended you with my apparently infantile writing. I will now leave you to your arrogance

Yeah, something tells me you DO like deflating people, Rob, as often as you try to do it.
