Here's the link to a well-researched article about indie publishing that should clarify some points that we've brought up previously in this thread: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/1 ... _multiline .

So what battle is this guy talking about?

Why is it that so many self-publishers (or those who write about them) want to make it an either/or thing? Why does one route have to be right/smart/the best thing since marmalade, and the other wrong/dumb/going the way of the dinosaur?

If I might offer a bit of advice? If you read an article, any article, that employes this 'us against them' mentality, read it with a huge box of salt. While there might be tidbits of useful advice in them, you will also find a great deal of misinterpreted and misleading information. These are the articles (and writers) who have an agenda and people writing from that standpoint will just naturally want to prove their point, even if it means hedging on facts or using misleading terminology.

Rumor has it, one big-name author even resorted to rallying fans, fuming about the deleterious effect eBooks have had on her income. Another traditionally published author went so far as to refer to self-publishing as “literary karaoke.”

Which 'big-name author'? Which 'traditionally published author'? Where did they find this?

Now, in addition to declining paperback royalties, traditional authors face stiff competition from inexpensive self-published e-books. No wonder they’re angry.

Again, who's angry? Where are the sources for that statement?

well over 100 indie authors have sold more than 50,000 books

In the old days, determined authors turned to self-publishing—or vanity presses, as they were called—as a last resort.

Apparently this author doesn't know the difference between self-publishing and vanity publishers.

went to their grave believing their work did not measure up.

Today, publishers expect authors to have a solid platform.

Source (While this may be true of nonfiction, fiction writers typically don't have or need a 'platform'. A platform means you've established yourself as an expert in the subject you're writing about. So fiction writers need one because?)

But, like or not, indie publishing is here to stay.

Self-publishing has always been around. In fact, it would be appropriate to call self-publishing 'traditional'.

One should also note that this article was written for IndieReader.com, "The essential consumer guide to self-published books and the people who write them". So we should obviously consider this to be a balanced look.

I agree with wondering about the sources.

I thought the article was interesting, but sometimes articles come along that seem to be trying to convince writers to go a certain way. How many of you get those emails or see those ads/articles from WD that say "Last Chance to Get Paid to Write" and it's all about being a copywriter and it says something like "My stuff wasn't getting read and being a writer was so lame until I went this totally different direction!" I always think it's to weed out some writers and get them to give up and do copywriting instead. This definitely seemed to try to convice others to be self-published and made it seem really easy to be majorly succesful, but I think as with any article or information we read, there should be other sources examined as well.
Previously published writer starting over.
