Competition from beyond the grave

Postby Oldtimer » Fri Jan 11, 2013 7:24 am

I was checking Smashwords this morning and was staggered to see that the Estate of Barbara Cartland is offering several of her romances, all under 45,000 words, at $3.49 each. They were published by M-y Books and are included in a "Pink Collection".

Is this a good or a bad thing for struggling new authors? Will people attracted by Dame Barbara Cartland's name be more inclined to browse the rest of the e-books in Smashwords' Romance section? Or will they not even glance at the writings of we lesser, but living, mortals?

BTW - can't resist adding that it looks like you can be a ghost writer on either side of the grave.

Let's hope that aspiring romance writers take note of the competition and improve their own offerings to match and surpass Cartland's efforts.

Bearing in mind that writers aren't really in competition with each other. People don't buy one book and that's it. They may buy one of Cartland's books first - but it doesn't mean they won't buy some other author's next.
"It seems rather like wanting to be ... a writer, rather than wanting to write. It should be a by-product, not a thing in itself. Otherwise, it's just an ego trip." - Roger Zelazny
