Advice on getting started

Hello everyone,

I'm a new writer (at 40 I'm just getting started). What's the best way to learn to write. I understand that reading and writing a lot are a bit part of it. But are there any classes or self study programs that would be helpful?

Any other tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Other than learning/refreshing yourself on basic grammar, reading the types of books you want to write and then taking "pen in hand" are the only ways to become a writer, IMHO. You can take all the classes and read all the how-to books you want, and they still won't get words on paper.

Just tell a story. The more you tell, the better you get.

I don't think they lean towards pantsing as much as they understand that writing is not making widgets - ie, no one method will work for every writer. I'm not sure why that's so difficult for some people to understand, but there it is, regardless.

Insisting that all writers use the method you do does more harm than good. Many writers simply cannot work that way. Forcing that method on me certainly would have meant writing one unfinished piece of crap and nothing else (I know - been there, done that, never again).

If it works for you, great! Suggesting others try it, fine. Telling them they can't be successful without it - completely wrong. And yes, until you drop the rigidity, you will continue to get arguments, just as you would if you insisted that 2+2 = 7. I mean, you're telling a great many writers they can't possibly be doing exactly what they are doing!

[quote="williamadams"]lots of people will disagree with me

but this is the ONLY way that worked for me

i did not learn how to write in high school
they taught counterproductive methods that were also wrong

i did not learn how to write in college
they kept making us write and telling us what we did wrong
socratic method is a big fail and very inefficient

i learned to write when i had to write for work
my uncle wrote a book which i had forgotten about which he gave me as a HS graduation present

the key to writing is ORGANISATION and PLANNING. ***PERIOD***

it is a given that you can spell, have a reasonable vocabulary, and can write a sentence.
after that it is all ORGANISING and little else.

i will not go into the details as that would start more people disagreeing with me.

but if your organising method works for you then you will be able to write.
and if you cant write then you need to find a better organising process.

maybe i should query WD about an article on organising.
but they seem to lean towards the pantsing approach so i wont waste my time.

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. What have you sold to large publishers? Tell me th9is, and I'll know whether youor way of learning works.
