I can't bloody decide!

Postby Isa Halley » Thu Aug 04, 2016 2:33 pm

One thing is finished, another starts.... I'm done with revising now BUT I have a brand new problem!
FINDING an agent. What a misery!

Okay, I'm trying to stay positive ( tryyyiiiingggg)

Can some offer some insights please?

1. How do you find a perfect agent- out of thousands that are out there...
2. How do you do your search? Any tips? atm, I'm just browsing a directory...
3. Or should I rather search by agency and then find an agent within that agency?!
4. I just want someone I can connect with...

Thanks loads, guys, I do appreciate your insights/ advice and encouragement - You've been great!

You can start with Guide to Literary Agents that Writer's Digest puts out. With this book, you can read and see which agents want to see what... (I personally buy a copy every other year) Predators and Editors is a website you can filter through. I know there are other listings but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Also depends on your locality somewhat; some lists specialise in U.S. agents, some in U.K. and so on. Those are probably the two bigger English language markets, so you're in luck if you're in one of those, but I'm sure there'll be local agents wherever you're based.

Find the agents who have represented books similar to yours.

Find published books that are as close to yours as possible. Learn who handled those books. Query same. You don't need an agent you can connect with, you need an agent editors connect with on a regular basis. A good agent is one who has a great sales record, not one you can connect with.

THAT is very helpful. Thanks so much James. I smiled when you said- you don't need an agent you can connect with, you need an agent editors connect with! - omg- spot on!

You could start here:
http://aaronline.org/

You could also look at books you like, that are like your book, and find out who the author's agent it. Could be named in the acknowledgements, or on the author's website if there is one.

Yes, you want an agent who connects with publishers, but I would think you would also want an agent who connects with you, and your genre, and who will do their best to get your book published.

I agree that it is more pleasant work to write than to try to find an agent! :)

How do you find the perfect agent? I've never heard of any writer having the luxury of picking and choosing among agents offering representation. On the other hand, you'll need to choose from those who represent your genre - if you write YA adventure, you won't want to waste your time and agents' by submitting to agents who represent only writers who produce romance novels.
