Do mags consider a BLOG as a published article?

Postby WriterJack » Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:49 am

The instructor of a writing class I am taking requires that we put our work on eBlogger so it can be shared among the class members for comments. However, some of the articles I write will eventually be sent to magazines that only accept first serial rights. Will my articles be considered published if they are placed on a BLOG in this manner?

Unless the blog is by invitation only and exclusive to class members, my bet would be that they will consider it published.  Anything you submit, you should be up front about this.  It isn't about just selling the one piece.  The goal is to establish a relationship with the publication for future assignments, and if they discover the article somewhere else after buying it from you without being told up front, you'll be burning a bridge.

Just my opinion, but that's what I would do.

on a blog?

I'd say no.

Why? because anyone and their mother can have a blog and post anything they want. no exchange of monetary or goods for services rendered was done so nothing makes it offical in any manor.

Published means that your work has been seen and is accessible to a wide audience. Posting work on a blog does indeed count as published in an editor's eyes. Why would an editor want to pay a writer to publish work that has already been available (and is still available through blog archives) for free on the Internet?

Even posting work for critique can be considered published. That's why a few writer's forums online have a critique area closed to anyone but members that cannot be accessed by the public at large. I'm critique director for a writer's site called intelligentdiscussions.com and that's how the critique area is set up, for that very reason.

How much of the article does it apply to? The purpose of a critique forum is to improve what we are thinking. If a portion of an article was posted in raw form, critiqued, and reworked... is it still considered ‘published?’

I think Cindy, one of our members here, had some issues with trying to publish something she had on her blog. I've heard and read similar things elsewhere, too. I'd encourage anyone who has a blog to only post general information and never post anything they might want to sell. It's just not worth it.
