Tolkein LOTR Single Quotes?

Postby marcus_u » Wed Feb 08, 2006 9:49 am

Hello,

I just recently noticed after years of reading that in Tolkein's LOTR the vast majority of the characters speech is in single ' quotes '?

Why is this?

Every other fiction book I own has the standard double "quotes" around character's text?

Thank you,
Marcus:)

I believe it's because Tolkien was British. In Britain they use single quotes and double quotes imply thoughts, etc. I'm pretty sure that's correct because my cousins in London have sent me numerous books over the years and they've all had that same format. ;)

^^ I concur. I'm reading Minette Walters "Disordered Minds" and it's single quotes for speech. I read Kathy Page's "Alphabet", and it too is single quotes. Both are UK (or grew up in the UK) writers.
